KDE 4.8 released, wants to sashay its way into your computer
- raphman 15y agoThe engadget article does not give any relevant detail. Link to actual release announcement: http://kde.org/announcements/4.8/ http://kde.org/announcements/4.8/
- moondowner 15y agoDefinitely, also note that in the official announcements there are links to separate announcements for the different parts that make KDE (announcement for plasma, for the applications and for the platform). Also for those using Kubuntu here's how to get it: http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-sc-4.8.0 http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-sc-4.8.0
- darklajid 15y ago"Sure, it might not have the marketing flair, nor mindshare of another Linux-based project we know, but that doesn't mean the folks behind KDE haven't been feverishly polishing their take on the perfect desktop environment." Bzzzzt. Comparing desktop environment and gnome-based-distribution = not useful. And there's nothing of insight on engadget. Let's head to http://kde.org/announcements/4.8/ http://kde.org/announcements/4.8/ instead.
- sp332 15y agoI think they were talking about Unity, not the entire Ubuntu distro.
- darklajid 15y agoUnity is a small thing on top of gnome, replacing the gnome-shell. Even arguing like this the comparison is crap. KDE vs. Gnome makes sense. Unity vs. Gnome-shell. Fedora vs. Ubuntu. The one used by engadget is like comparing apples to hazelnuts.
- tikhonj 15y agoI always find new versions of KDE disproportionately exciting. I remember switching to 4.6 and having a list of things that annoyed me. I think it involved the display settings, some of the activity stuff, Emacs not going full-screen properly... Mostly minor stuff. Since I am lazy and unmotivated, I just remembered these little annoyances but never bothered to tell anybody or file bug reports. 4.7 fixed all of them, as if somebody had read my mind. It was eerie. I feel like KDE is the only desktop environment I've used that's actually aimed at me. Hopefully 4.8 will bring even more great improvements. I would be upgrading now if it wasn't 5 in the morning...
- moondowner 15y agoLet it download and install the packages and go to sleep :)
- pbhjpbhj 15y agoSo, is 4.7 at the level of a genuine RC then ... /flamebait FWIW I'm a long time user of KDE and having used other DE have gone back to it; it's quite low in my dependency tree now!
- agumonkey 15y agoSoon KDE 4 will reach r5, then it will be KDE 4. (sleep 'troll)
- itmag 15y agoSashay? I want a window manager that wends, ambles, perambulates or meanders, dammit.
- darksaga 15y agoI used KDE4 when it first came out, but was swayed to use Mint by a co-worker. I haven't been back since. But this is what I love about Linux distro's. You don't have to wait years for the newer versions to come out with the fixes you need. The next release might be right around the corner. I've made a note to check it out this weekend.
