I disagree with the author that a common characteristic of future wars will be a ground based "slugfest" like the one happening in Ukraine.
If the Russians wanted to annilalate Ukraine they wouldnt be even be using ground forces and fighting the war the way that they are. They would use airpower and launch missiles from within Russia.
- somewhereoutth 4y agoBut that is exactly what they have been doing - for example by trying to destroy the power grid over winter. They failed. The only weapon they have that they haven't used is nuclear. It has been made clear to them that the consequences of nuclear weapon release would be 'catastrophic'. Thus the slugfest, as we supply Ukraine with what it needs to continue destroying Russia's conventional forces in the field.
- meh8881 4y agoRussia has used up nearly their entire stock of conventional cruise missiles and has lost hundreds of planes and helicopters. They do have many more planes. They don’t have the pilots or maintenance available to use them all. Or the guided munitions to make them viable. It’s insane to imply Russia is not trying to annihilate the places they’re attacking when you see how utterly leveled they’re becoming with relentless unguided artillery.
