Mojang Targets Repositories of Browser-Based Minecraft Copy ‘Eaglercraft’
- devwastaken 4y agoThey took it down because it didn't have microtransactions aimed at children, and doesnt require you to purchase Microsoft subscriptions to play on servers. Only Microsoft gets the opportunity to exploit kids. Eaglercraft from what I understand was a very old version of Minecraft no one plays. "Mojang" (actually Microsoft don't be fooled), is not in any way threatened by these. The time they've spent paying lawyers is more loss than what these would do.
- sitkack 4y agoSeems like the blowback would be worse than the clones existing. So you remove any plausibly offending assets and now you are unencumbered. I find this ironic as Minecraft itself was a clone of Infiniminer. Infiniminer by Zach Barth (of Zachtronics) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__Nq2vNcpIo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__Nq2vNcpIo was the "inspiration" for Minecraft.
- Arrath 4y agoIIUC Eaglecraft consisted of legit Mojang code, no? So a bit of a stretch to compare it to Minecrat's inspiration.
- sitkack 4y agoI am referring to lifting and remixing. I was setting context, not making the argument that they were identical. Minecraft 1.3 (11+ years old) is of no financial worth to Mojang. All FP voxel crafting games are going to look similar.
- ayunami2000 4y agobtw there's 1.5 and 1.8 versions of Eaglercraft as well, they can be found at https://eaglercraft.ru https://eaglercraft.ru and there's a whole community of hosting eaglercraft servers on replit and playing it in school. it sort of makes sense to not want minecraft's brand to be associated with "unblocked games sites"
- gorkish 4y agoThe repo was literally hosting assets and code ripped straight from the commercial release of Minecraft. The author's current approach of publishing tools to extract the information from your own copy of Minecraft is totally fine and ought to have been the way to run this project from the beginning. As precedent, I present every doom clone ever made.
- mrkeen 4y ago> Mojang sent a DMCA takedown notice to its sister company GitHub I want to see Microsoft sue Microsoft over this.
- iforgotpassword 4y agoWhat was the tech stack? Did they actually port Minecraft to web assembly or js, or did they use a JVM that was ported to the browser? I guess a Java applet is out of question. ;-)
- duskwuff 4y agoI believe they're using TeaVM to translate Java bytecode to JS: https://www.teavm.org/ https://www.teavm.org/
- astlouis44 4y agoMinecraft already runs in a browser. https://classic.minecraft.net/ https://classic.minecraft.net/
