- corobo 4y agoLooks like the link is rickrolling when you come in via HN referrer if anyone's confused. Also might explain the downvotes on the parent comment if you know the URL to be legit. Copy paste the link to save a minor annoyance. It's a bit persistent as they used a 301 permo redirect, open incognito if you've already clicked it.
- pluc 4y agoThat's kinda funny
- DanAtC 4y agoNot as funny as a nut in an egg cup
- crazygringo 4y agoOK, guess I'll be the one to ask then -- why does the tildeverse hate HN and not want anyone visiting from it...?
- tedunangst 4y agoYour link might get popular on HN, and inevitably someone will comment "well that's stupid", and you will read it and feel bad. Not reading HN comments is apparently not an option.
- snapplebobapple 4y agoWell, that's stupid.....
- beepbooptheory 4y agoWell there can also be quite a lot of bigotry and hate around here, don't blame people wanting to block traffic from here, especially when your trying to create something sweet and pure like this.
- throwanem 4y agoI'm pretty sure JWZ is the OG for redirecting HN referrers, and whatever else you care to say about the man, if you tell me he does this so's not to get his fee-fees hurt, I will laugh in your face.
- pengaru 4y agoThat's JWZ though. When I last explored the tildeverse it was rife with easily triggered precious snowflakes actively searching for reasons to be offended. It wouldn't surprise me if the fee-fees protection comment had at least a grain of truth to it...
- throwanem 4y agoIt may be simply that HN commenters, taken in the large, far less frequently have anything nearly so novel or worthwhile to say as the mean participant here believes himself able to contribute. This alone strikes me as sufficient reason both for referrer redirects as a mild but not ineffective deterrent, and also for the general - and generally low - opinion of this site which is held in many other quarters. Prior experience strongly suggests your next move, or someone's, will be to ask why I stay here myself, if I have such a low opinion of the place. The question is pointless, and has two answers. One is for the opportunity to indulge my own love for needless pettifogging and disputation, a flaw in my character I have never managed fully to extirpate. The other is that once in a blue moon, at a rate slightly in excess of that I've seen most other places, someone here does actually say something worth taking seriously. Perhaps this thread will surprise me in that regard.
- corobo 4y ago> a mild but not ineffective deterrent I spent more time trying to find why there was a rickroll than I did on the site itself. Honestly it worked perfectly on me. Snipe the nerds before they can interact with your community. In all serious though I do get it, I'd definitely avoid injecting Reddit and HN into a small community. You're just asking to overload the culture and Eternal September yourself doing that. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September
- lloydatkinson 4y agoThe same reason I and some other people had HN redirecting to the wikipedia MP3 fart sound - the HN bubble is toxic and ridiculous at times.
- e-clinton 4y agoSo is the entire world. Fairly childish move on their part
- lloydatkinson 4y agoWho cares.
- oneeyedpigeon 4y agoI always assumed it was the traffic burst people were trying to avoid — you really think the HN crowd is more toxic than the average internet user?
- input_sh 4y ago10 days ago someone did a Show HN for an old-school forum. If you go through the comments you'll see the author had to switch to manually approving new accounts almost immediately because people from here started posting racial slurs. So, yeah, I can absolutely see why some people might wanna do things like this. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34829076 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34829076
- lloydatkinson 4y agoDoesn't surprise me tbh
- lloydatkinson 4y agoYes absolutely - HN is consistently one of the places that hates on specific libraries and technologies far more than the wider internet. If you speak in favour of them you get comments questioning your experience and skills. It's horrible.
- flangola7 4y agoWhat RickRoll?
- corobo 4y agoThis one https://img.imgy.org/1QVk.jpg https://img.imgy.org/1QVk.jpg
- BLKNSLVR 4y agoAnd pubnix: Public Access Unix Systems Public Access Unix Systems are shared computers that people share and log on to.
- zelphirkalt 4y agoLike really Unix systems, or were they so uninformed, that they meased up their name? I mean it is in the name of GNU/Linux, that it is not Unix ...
- stonogo 4y agoSDF, arguably the largest pubnix provider, runs NetBSD, which is a Unix. They also offer Linux, TOPS-20, Plan 9, and other Unix derivatives, but their core systems are all Unix.
- hidelooktropic 4y agoThanks for the link. I now understand the tildeverse really well. I love the way it explains it so easily and didn't take much reading or time to understand.
