Does anyone else think that this guy's name sounds like a name that Strong Bad would make up when prank calling Marzipan?
"Hello Marzipan! This is your bank man... Sam...Bankman Fried."
- teachrdan 4y agoSame with Bernie Madoff -- a guy who literally burned people and made off with their money.
- lo_zamoyski 4y agoNomen est omen.
- shiftpgdn 4y agoNominative determinism in action.
- bpodgursky 4y agoI would be cautious here — the financial normative descriptivism of Ashkenazi Jewish names is in large part an artifact of their (restricted and often discriminated) interactions with the rest of europe at the time. Yes there were a lot of Jewish bankers (and still are). Is it because of discrimination (getting forced into certain economic sectors)? That's complicated... but we should probably not make too much fun of them all the same.
- lo_zamoyski 4y agoWho said anything about Jews?
- bpodgursky 4y agoIt is the origin of, and clearly indicated by, the name in question.

- goldenchrome 4y agoI don’t understand how having the opportunity to manage a country’s money supply is oppression. Help me out.
- boredumb 4y agoRunning large financial entities can cause generational trauma, or something.
- mrguyorama 4y agoBecause those same people were pointed at as the cause of all problems and physically expelled, at least when they weren't murdered, like a hundred times over centuries. Kings, rulers, thought leaders always pointed at the jews and said "look they charge you interest on your debt, theyre so evil" while they were the only religion that ALLOWED them to charge interest on debt, meaning they were basically the only class who could be bankers by Christian rules, which often meant regional laws. What's actually kind of neat is that Islam majority countries solved the same problem by inventing new financial instruments and skirting the rules as written. "I'm not charging interest, this is a fee for the service of this weird rent to own structure we made". I don't think it's common in Islam to hate jews for being "The bankers". But you knew this, because you didn't ask this question in earnest.
- goldenchrome 4y agoWhy did other religions deem it immoral to charge interest?

- aldanor 4y agoWith Fried being pronounced as "fry-ed".
