I hope we're finally entering an era where game stories can be treated with respect, like what happened to comics a decade or so ago. But I'm not sure if this will make the medium explode more than it has. I'm a millennial and grew up with the transition to 3D games, they're part of my muscle memory. I have no idea how someone new to games would approach a stealth-action game like The Last of Us. That's a lot of controls to learn and assumptions to make.
- lumost 4y agoThere are now three proof points across The Witcher, The Last of Us, and Cyberpunk Edgerunners that high-end adaptations enhance the gaming experience and lead to increased game sales. It'll be tough for a producer to pass up the opportunity to get paid ~10 dollars for a season + 60 dollars for a game sale.

- Maursault 4y ago> I hope we're finally entering an era where game stories can be treated with respect, like what happened to comics a decade or so ago. Prior to story-immersive games, even the simplest games usually had some semblance of a backstory. Has there been a movement in literature that has intentionally not shown respect to game stories or comics? What is the difference between a game story and a story? Isn't it the story that makes games compelling in the first place? Would games be as attractive if they didn't have stories? I think you're making a distinction that isn't there. Whether it is a game story, a comic story, or a film story, or a TV story, or a book story, or a true story, or an historical story, or a fictional story, an oral story, what these all have in common is a comprehensive narrative, their story. We can reduce the concept to "story" readily and without any confusion. Imagine if a book you liked became a best-seller and was made into multi-season TV show and a series of films. Would you then exclaim with joy, "I hope we're finally entering an era where book stories can be treated with respect?" Everyone loves stories. The foundation of the largest religion in the world is based on a story, as are all religions. Stories are as old as humanity itself.
