Almost the whole IBM 360 mainframe line used 24 bits for addresses, and you had the top byte for your own use. The 370 line had a mode for 31-bit (not a typo) addresses in user space.
- corysama 4y agoNBA Jam Tournament Edition for the arcade had a CPU with bitwise addressing https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/TMS34010 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/TMS34010 and the programmers used the lower 3 bits of pointers to store extra values. Source: a friend of mine ported the game to the PC by hand-transcoding the assembly.
