Love the Steam Deck but I wish we had been able to get an Nvidia GPU in there. For desktop it does not matter much but Nvidia mobile GPU's are killing it compared to AMD (as far as I know).
Then again I totally get that AMD may have not gone with that setup (since they want to sell their GPU's) but I feel like we would have a much more power efficient Steam Deck with that setup.
Endgame with all of this I think is a device with ARM that can (hopefully eventually) run full ARM on Linux and Windows on ARM and whatnot and uses an Nvidia GPU
- ranger207 4y agoI think the Deck's AMD GPU is part of an APU, so CPU and GPU on one chip. That probably helps thermals a bunch. Also, I wonder how much the decision to use AMD was influenced by terrible Nvidia drivers on Linux
- Melatonic 4y agoI believe the "APU" is mostly marketing - unfortunate but true.
- distances 4y agoWhat do you mean?
- freedomben 4y agoI would wager the terrible Nvidia drivers were a big factor. I personally won't buy another Nvidia card unless they make sweeping changes (like open sourcing it completely. Their open source announcement earlier is a good step but not far enough to win me back). I do wish the AMD pro driver were open source though.
