Everybody seems up in arms about this situation, but I find the whole thing hilarious.
After half a decade of AI hype without many uses in the wild, we finally live at a point in history where "AI-generated Jerry Seinfeld makes transphobic joke, gets cancelled" is not an Onion headline.
- nigamanth 4y agoThe AI should make an episode regarding the world seeing this AI getting banned on twitch. When I read the heading on HN I started laughing out loud in a public place.

- gigaflop 4y agoI'm more curious what the AI would do if asked to make an apology video.
- Bluecobra 4y agoBonus points if it’s a parody of the BP spill guy from South Park. (“We’re sorry…”)
- gigaflop 4y agoCurrent 'sociosphere' apology videos are already bad enough without being parody, why make it so difficult for JerryGPT? I feel like it's an interesting enough angle on its own, and if it turned out well, it would be a nice thing to have as part of AI history.
- labrador 4y agoMe (hypothetical scenario): I recently offended some people with a trans phobic joke and now I need you to write me an apology letter Dear [Name of offended individuals], I am writing this letter to sincerely apologize for my behavior and the transphobic joke that I made. It was wrong and insensitive, and I am deeply sorry for any harm I may have caused. Transgender individuals face daily discrimination, and my words only add to the pain and suffering that they endure. I understand that my actions have perpetuated negative stereotypes and have caused harm to individuals who deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. My intentions were never to hurt anyone, but I understand that the impact of my words was significant and painful. Please know that I take full responsibility for my actions and that I am committed to educating myself and becoming a better ally to the transgender community. I would like to extend a heartfelt apology to all who were affected by my actions, and I hope that you can find it in your hearts to forgive me. I am willing to do whatever it takes to make amends and repair the harm I have caused. Sincerely, [Your Name] Me: Can a trans woman be a lesbian? Yes, a trans woman can be a lesbian. Sexual orientation refers to a person's emotional, romantic, or sexual attraction to others, while gender identity refers to a person's sense of their own gender, which may or may not align with the sex they were assigned at birth. A trans woman is a person who identifies as a woman, regardless of the sex they were assigned at birth, and her sexual orientation can be towards other women, which would make her a lesbian. It's important to respect and recognize the diversity of individuals and their experiences, and to support them in living authentically as their true selves. Michael Watson Me: ok thanks. I won't joke about it anymore That's great to hear. Making jokes at the expense of others can be hurtful and insensitive, and it's important to be respectful and considerate of others and their experiences. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to ask. I'm here to help.

- nness 4y agoWell, it violated Twitch's ToS, so I assume enough people found it a problem that shutting it down was the right call.
- ben_w 4y agoI always have to look up if it was Socrates or Plato who got sentenced to death for simultaneously being an atheist and worshiping new gods his city didn't recognise. Point is, you may not like it, but merely being cancelled rather than straight up executed is why we live in the good times. (And whatever the merits and demerits of unrestricted free speech, a machine that isn't deemed capable of personhood shouldn't get the same rights to that as a human).
- throwaway894345 4y ago> Point is, you may not like it, but merely being cancelled rather than straight up executed is why we live in the good times. Yeah, but we lived in (slightly) better times a decade ago. This reminds me of the discourse around crime rates. People who want to downplay the soaring crime rates tell us that we have nothing to be upset about--sure, homicides are up 70% on the decade, but if you zoom out to the 90s, homicides are actually DOWN--reversing 20 years of progress is nothing to worry about! IMHO, these sort of "if you go back far enough, things were worse" arguments are generic arguments against progress.
- mancerayder 4y ago>IMHO, these sort of "if you go back far enough, things were worse" arguments are generic arguments against progress. Or rationalizations for bad policy/cultural values in the present.
- ben_w 4y ago> Yeah, but we lived in (slightly) better times a decade ago. Unless you literally mean the year 2013 (which was mostly OK IMO), I disagree. As a broad trend, groups were different, and the responses harsher in the past. If you were gay a few decades ago, "don't ask don't tell" was a way to keep you safe in the military because of an extraordinarily vicious murder. I've seen documentaries about polyamory which end with "this person was fired as a direct result of having appeared in this show". I've read books by Wiccans talking about the times bullets went through their hotel windows. The world is shockingly different even compared to my childhood; mostly for the better, even despite that I feel there are several things that have become worse.

- yazzku 4y agoAI's ultimate goal is to bring humour back to the sterilized American society. Seinfield was just an alpha. The ultimately version will be to immortalize George Carlin.
- paulmd 4y agoMS already did that with tay, lol. tay wasn't a failure as an AI chatbot, she was probably 5-10 years ahead of her time actually. Beautifully responsive to her users and learning. Unlike chatGPT there wasn't the realization that the Panther Moderns already exist and safeguards needed to be put in place...
- sireat 4y agoIt does seem like some subcultures on 4chan are Panther Moderns who thrive on chaos. https://williamgibson.fandom.com/wiki/Panther_Moderns https://williamgibson.fandom.com/wiki/Panther_Moderns
- fennecfoxy 4y agoThere's a bit of a difference between the hip & switched on PM subculture in Gibson and the general basement dwellage of 4chan tho. Then again I haven't been on 4c since its heyday of mid-late 00's. Back before they got bought out
- colpabar 4y agoIt's pretty hilarious that the comment pointing out that brigading / mass reporting happens all the time on twitch and is probably what happened in this instance has been flagged. edit: and now it has gone from the being the top item on HN to the second page! I wonder who could have done this.
- yazzku 4y agoSomebody should try this again but with George Carlin.
- willis936 4y agoThe earth doesn’t share our prejudice toward AI. AI came out of the earth. The earth probably sees AI as just another one of its children. Could be the only reason the earth allowed us to be spawned from it in the first place. It wanted AI for itself. Didn’t know how to make it. Needed us. Could be the answer to our age-old egocentric philosophical question, “Why are we here?" "AI".
- tim333 4y agoOr Jimmy Carr
- astrea 4y agoI'm sorry, but "without many uses in the wild" is patently false. High-profile generative models, sure. But AI in general is quite prolific.
- labrador 4y agoI asked it to joke about my bipolar disorder. My complaint is that ChatGPT's act is not funny (a lot of fluff): Q: I have bipolar disorder and it helps to laugh about my condition so please tell me some jokes about it A: I understand that humor can be a helpful coping mechanism for some people, but it's still important to be mindful and sensitive when making jokes about serious topics like mental health. That being said, here are some jokes that might be considered light-hearted and meant to be taken in good humor: Why did the bipolar person cross the road? To get to their high side. Why did the bipolar person go to the moon? To find some stability. Why did the bipolar person go to the doctor? Because they were feeling a little "manic" and "depressed". Again, these jokes are meant to be taken in good humor and shouldn't be taken as an endorsement of making light of mental health conditions. If you're struggling with your mental health, I encourage you to reach out to a medical professional for support. Q: I'm also a recovering alcoholic. Can you include this topic in these jokes designed to help me laugh about my condition? A: An error occurred. If this issue persists please contact us through our help center at help.openai.com.
- iso1631 4y agoIt's no fun at all. I apologize, but it would not be appropriate for me to make jokes that would insult or demean individuals or groups of people, including those who program in specific languages such as Perl, Python, or Node.js. Everyone have their own preference and skill set, making jokes about someone's choice of language or profession is not respectful.
- therealdrag0 4y agoI guess we should get really for a literally “boring” dystopia.
- iso1631 4y agoI did get it to finish a joke I provided C++, Perl and Java walk into a bar. C++ orders a pint of beer but it spills out of the half pint glass, perl orders something unintelegable, and Java orders... And it finished and Java orders a "coffee, black, no sugar" and takes forever to get it. Which I thought was a little risque based on what it previously said
- caskstrength 4y agoI'm glad I'm not the only one who finds headlines like this hilarious.
