This is a must for any valuable Google Account. I've also never been challenged since setting it up. It appears to be sufficient authentication.

    You have to enroll two keys to turn on advanced protection. And you are instructed to keep aside one of those two keys in a safe location as backup.

      And I wouldn't turn it on without at least three keys (one of which can be your phone) -- the consequences of accidentally getting down to zero are too high.
