Tell HN: I was able to select and copy text from a photo
I took a screenshot of a particularly funny Limkedin post to share with my wife. When I double tapped to zoom in to the photo, it selected a word, offered to “select all”, “look up”, or “copy”.
(On iOS 16.x, iPhone 14)
Maybe this is old news to others but the first time I’m noticing this.
- theamk 4y agoIt's pretty powerful, it even solves old captchas :) Technical details (and a fun project): "Image Stacks and iPhone Racks – Building an Internet Scale Meme Search Engine (findthatmeme.com)" https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34303926 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34303926
- geoah 4y agoThe feature is called “live text” and has a couple of different features. Copy text from photos, videos, and using the camera app. Pretty nice.
- joezydeco 4y agoPress the arrow and there are other options like Translate.
- kratom_sandwich 4y agoAlthough I have become a bit weary of Apple's marketing speak, when I discovered this feature it really did feel like magic.
- Sai_ 4y agoyeah, I've always wondered how hard it would be to use OCR to read text from photos and why no one had done it before. Now Apple has gone ahead and implemented it.
- hackmiester 4y agoDid you also know you can search your photos by typing in something that is found in the photo? I use this at work all the time for "whiteboard" for instance. All of this stuff is done using on-device intelligence.
