But wouldn't Google, even without search ads (which are only up +4% YOY to $40 bn), still be a hundred of billions behemoth? Sure it wouldn't have a 1.3 trillion cap without search ads but Google is also Android, Chrome, ChromeOS, Google Workspace / Google Suite (which, what, 7 millions of SMEs are using), cloud services, etc.
I don't see Google "crashing completely" anytime soon.
- rollcat 4y agoIt feels like 2007 to me again, when Vista was flopping and everyone was announcing the year of Linux on the desktop. It's definitely opening a window of opportunity for a competitor, but that doesn't guarantee anyone's success (or failure).
- psychphysic 4y agoDidn't even mention YouTube. Google is so big and diverse it's easy to forget all its major bits.
- totalhack 4y agoThey have been slowly removing targeting tools to make your spend less efficient too. You can't even target exact queries anymore without it pulling in 500 others Google's AI thinks is a match. On top of that there is definitely a pay-to-play tier if you are a huge advertiser. You'll find many of the big boys double and triple serving ads under small sub brands, which is against Google policy. You can report it and Google just ignores you. How about those pages that are just lists of more syndicated Google search ads? Clearly a "bridge page" which is a policy violation but it's some bigger spender behind it.
- wiseowise 4y agoForgot YouTube, which literally has no competitors.
- a13o 4y agoMaybe none for long pre-recorded video, but they haven't done a good job with YouTube Gaming or Shorts which are both defensive plays against growing competitors. YouTube's decline will look more like an unbundling than a 1:1 replacement.
- jefftk 4y agoWhat about TikTok? When I visit YouTube now the entire bottom half of the home page is "Shorts".
- treeman79 4y agoTik Tok is slowly being banned. And for good reasons.
- mikrotikker 4y agoRumble, odyssey, rokfin, bitchute
- ekianjo 4y agoall of them account for less than 0.01% of YT traffic
- mikrotikker 4y agoAnd? Sounds like a good reason to use them, help the competing. No use sitting on YouTube complaining about youtube.
- typon 4y agoThanks for the list - I have not heard of any of these products. I would add vimeo to this list as well.
- mikrotikker 4y agoYes vimeo has the nicest ui imo
- cm2187 4y agoIBM and GE are still around. Doesn't mean they haven't irreversibly peaked.
- danaris 4y agoYeah; I think far, far too many people think that the decline of a company like Google would look like a near-immediate collapse into either irrelevance or outright destruction. That's not remotely realistic. It's much more likely to look like what's happened to IBM since the rise of personal computing: its special "no one ever got fired for buying it" status goes away, and while it may linger as a company that still provides a product and/or service to other companies (those it's managed to make itself indispensable to), it may shrink, and its popular image fade, for a number of years. Given the differences in Google's portfolio vs IBM's, I'd say there is more of a chance that Google would eventually collapse down to nothing, or nearly so, but it would still take a good while for that to happen.
- scarface74 4y agoIt came out in the Oracle trial that Google only made $27B in profit from Android from inception to the time of discovery. The fundamentals haven’t changed since then. Google pays Apple a reported $18B+ a year to be the default search engine on iOS devices. GCP is losing money, Google WorkSpace /GSuite has little penetration in the market compared to MS Office.
- amelius 4y agoCan't wait for Google to become a tech-only company.
