I always wanted to use mold in the build system I did last year: the metrics are fucking impressive.
There were subtle differences to gold and ldd that I didn’t have time to chase down, but it seems like the future.
- mgaunard 4y agoI can't say I've noticed much of a difference myself, maybe 20% faster at best.
- bobbylarrybobby 4y ago1/5 of the way toward theoretical perfection seems pretty good.
- Dylan16807 4y agoIf you speed it up by 1/5 ten times, is it 1/5 of the way to perfection each time? If yes I think that's an exaggerated way of measuring, if no then what was special about the particular baseline you picked? I think you need to use a log scale for this. It's a step or two toward perfection, but perfection is infinite steps away.
- benreesman 4y ago20% sounds about right on the figures I’ve heard, but on a big build that is massive.
- mgaunard 4y agoFor me linking only happens once, while most of the time is actually building stuff. Also the speedup is only for Debug builds, since Release ones use LTO anyway, and no amount of linker magic makes that fast.
- benreesman 4y agoDebug builds are in the iteration critical path. Improving the rate at which you improve your software is, well, you know the equation :)
- 3836293648 4y agoBut were you comparing just the linking step? Or the entire compilation process?
- mgaunard 4y agoJust the linking step, of course.
