Remember OpenAI's original mission statement?
> OpenAI is a non-profit artificial intelligence research company. Our goal is to advance digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, unconstrained by a need to generate financial return. Since our research is free from financial obligations, we can better focus on a positive human impact.
Let's just say that their goals have obviously changed.
edit: As with SBF, longtermism provides an excellent cover.

- unnouinceput 4y agoThe answer (or problem, depending on your point of view) is money. Remember Google's "Don't be evil"? Yeah, me neither.
- wendyshu 4y agoThere are two OpenAIs. OpenAI LP is for-profit, OpenAI Inc. isn't.
- 30minAdayHN 4y agoBut aren’t they also burning like $3M or something everyday? Maybe wishful, but I hope this is to offset the burn rather than make profits. I was worried that they would kill chatGPT because of the burn rate.
- ianzakalwe 4y agoAtm they have somewhat unlimited credit on Azure, how long it will last is hard to say.
- anthropodie 4y ago> $3M per day That figure really is eye watering like Sam said. Any chance we might be able to reduce that cost? It must be the power costs right? The hardware is one time cost I assume. Why not power it over renewables?
- drexlspivey 4y agoThey don't own the hardware, it's running on Azure
- anthropodie 4y agoOf course that makes sense.
- beepbooptheory 4y agoIts genius marketing honestly. What other company has basically entire 3rd party subreddits dedicated to defending their products as if its an epoch-defining moment? People will pay whatever for it out of a delusion of moral necessity at this point.
- kunai 4y agoTesla and SpaceX come to mind. Or Apple.
- sebzim4500 4y agoI agree that OpenAI's mission statement has always been complete horseshit, but they need to generate revenue eventually or they will run out of money.
- jasonhansel 4y agoIt's not like they're going to use any of that additional revenue to suddenly start achieving their original mission. So they won't accomplish the stated mission either way.
