My question is, how did he get so deep into obvious trouble (at least it should have been obvious to those close to him) without his presumably intelligent pare

My question is, how did he get so deep into obvious trouble (at least it should have been obvious to those close to him) without his presumably intelligent parents not having some kind of intervention? Surely they didn't know enough to be aware of what he was doing... The whole situation seems like a lesson about the dangers of hubris and entitlement.
