Tim Cook: Not Too Long from Now, You'll Wonder How You Led Your Life Without AR
- abudabi123 4y agoVR-AR should unleash the next demand cycle for the venerable "Mac Pro" brand category.
- xedrac 4y agoOh no. Apple has been infected by Meta. In all seriousness though, Apple can probably pull off some decent hardware in this space.
- nojito 4y agoAR is not VR
- pull_my_finger 4y agoFrom the FA: > Cook has in the past expressed his personal excitement for augmented reality and has hinted that Apple is working on AR/VR products. The company's first AR/VR product, a high-end headset rumored to be called "Reality Pro," is expected to be announced as soon as January.
- nojito 4y agoThe quote is misleading. Tim Cook has been pushing AR as opposed to VR
- coldtea 4y agoIt's not that far away either. Once you get a projection on top of your real view, adding 3D elements and hiding that view is just an incremental update... Besides Apple is already known to be working on a VR headset project for 2+ years now...
- LouDNL 4y agoNo thanks, both are too intrusive for me.
- klyrs 4y agoI still don't wonder how I lived without a cell phone. Other than some minor inconveniences, life was better.
- unsupp0rted 4y agoNearly every “relatable” problem in Seinfeld could have been solved if the characters could call and text each other on mobile
- coldtea 4y agoNearly every relatable problem in Seinfeld was contrived to death, blown up for comedic purposes, and trivial to begin with... We somehow lived in the 70s and 80s and mid-90s without mobile phones (and even until 2007 and the iPhone for most people without smartphones) and did just fine...
- raverbashing 4y agoOh no, no, it wasn't. Nostalgia is fun, but I've slowly realized all the stuff we didn't have - Getting lost on the city due to a wrong turn or similar and having to figure it out by yourself. You could ask at some gas station, with varied results - Very poor public transport info - No food delivery services, you could order pizza and that was it - No convenient messaging of other people independent from wires. You had pay phones and that's it. And maybe you could leave a message So, no, thanks, but I prefer the world of today for the most part
- coldtea 4y agoNone of those was any kind of big problem. Minor incovenience at times at best, and lazy dependance now at worse. I mean "- Getting lost on the city due to a wrong turn or similar", and amazingly billions still managed to get to their home, work, activity place just fine, even as tourists! >- No convenient messaging of other people independent from wires. You had pay phones and that's it. And maybe you could leave a message It was trully a marvellous time then!
- 0xmarcin 4y agoThe lack of usable hardware is the current problem now. I think Google Glass did it right, but was not liked by the average consumer as being overly nerdy. Other than that I think VR in a kind of glasses or a bain interface form would be an instant hit. Use cases range from e.g. police and military to everyday things. It would be amazing to e.g. take a look at a dark spot on the skin and get instant assessment if it is dangerous or building ikea wardrobe with instructions displayed over the materials....
- OnlyMortal 4y agoSo long as all the screws are provided :-)
- more_corn 4y agoAnd it conforms to a Geiger / warppunk aesthetic.
- ihatepython 4y agoI don't think I would ever wear Augmented Reality glasses in general. I would however consider wearing some kind of visual input device off to the side of my head, similar to Locutus of Borg in Star Trek Next Generation. Just not glasses.
- beardyw 4y agoTim, please just tell me one worthwhile way it will improve my life. When I bought my first smartphone I was going on holiday and was tired of taking a laptop and finding WiFi just to check my mail to see if my website had crashed. I also knew it would do satnav and be valuable for web browsing on the go. That's the kind of answers I am looking for.
- holler 4y agoFunny lately I keep thinking how much I want to get rid of my iphone, or any all-glass phone, and go back to haptic keyboard with minimal screen for basic functions.
- deafpolygon 4y agoAR is more desirable than VR because it gives them an excuse to scan/monetize your current surroundings for even more advertising data!
- Atheros 4y agoAR will definitely marginally improve the life of anyone who uses it and worsen the life of everyone around them, including people who themselves use AR, especially as the usage rate rises. The benefits have been talked to death so let's talk about some downsides: • Right now it is possible to opt out of location tracking in cities by simply leaving your phone at home or turning it off temporarily. If 10% of people start using AR, that will no longer be possible due to facial recognition. • Right now, you can mostly tell when someone is recording you in such a way that the video could be used against your interests (aiming a personal cell phone at you or, if and only if you intend to commit a crime, stores' security cameras (which don't record audio)). Also, right now, when you make a small mistake, you can presume that you were not recorded because people will not have had time to get their phone out and start recording. You apologize and life goes on. With 10% of people using AR, you must presume to be recorded at all times by people who can and will upload the video for everyone to see in exchange for minuscule social media engagement. • Right now, it is already relatively socially unacceptable to tell a friend or peer to stop using their phone in a social environment, like during dinner. I have experienced that it's a sure-fire way to ruin a dinner date. I see no reason why it would be different with ubiquitous AR. This will cause problems and I have a feeling that society's eventual solution will tend toward "let people do what they individually want" rather than the "we agree to stop using AR during this event". • The number of people who, just like the article says, cannot live without AR is going to be shockingly high. It will not be possible to get to know young people as people because their thinking process and personality will be so intertwined with AR that they shut down without it.
