I dunno; the article seems to make the perfect the enemy of the good.
Are most meat substitutes maximally healthy? Probably not. Are they likely healthier than the red meat they're replacing? Yes.
- nradov 4y agoThere is no reliable scientific evidence that meat substitutes produce better long-term health outcomes than regular (non processed) red meat.
- tstrimple 4y agoIt's difficult to measure long term health impacts of a product that has only been generally available for a couple years.
- darth_avocado 4y agoOunce for ounce, beyond meat burger has higher fat, higher sodium, lower iron and calcium than just regular ground 80/20 beef. Healthier is at best debatable.
- x0x0 4y agolower saturated fat, lower trans fats, lower cholesterol, etc. Is it a perfect win? No. Is it likely healthier per our best guesses at nutrition science per the articles I've read? Yes. Again, it's not perfect. https://chanapdavis.medium.com/the-skinny-and-fat-on-wall-street-darling-beyond-meat-902b7ea85492 https://chanapdavis.medium.com/the-skinny-and-fat-on-wall-st...
- anoonmoose 4y agoI wasn't sure about this so I looked it up... https://www.nutritionix.com/i/usda/beef-ground-80-lean-meat-20-fat-raw-4-oz/513fceb775b8dbbc210032b8 https://www.nutritionix.com/i/usda/beef-ground-80-lean-meat-... https://www.nutritionix.com/i/beyond-meat/beyond-beef-plant-based-ground/5d1ef894d42ac192589b87fb https://www.nutritionix.com/i/beyond-meat/beyond-beef-plant-... > higher fat untrue > higher sodium true > lower iron and calcium untrue Beyond has less calories, and less calories from fat. it also has less cholesterol and more protein. at least, according to this source. I suppose your final statement still stands, though. But to me the Beyond looks healthier, especially if you compensate for that increase in sodium elsewhere in your cooking.
- ac29 4y agoAre you comparing premade beyond meat patties to raw ground beef? Beyond meat burgers are preseasoned which is why the sodium is higher. You could eat unseasoned ground beef, but it wouldnt be very good.
- jhanschoo 4y agoThe Buddhist-cuisine mock meats that I get in my Asian supermarket are essentially gluten in marinade. I don't see how these are anywhere healthier than the meats they replace.
