Ask HN: Protonmail Alternative?
Hi I'm looking for a protonmail alternative, something reliable that allows linking of custom domain name. Thank you!
- a012 4y agoPurelymail.com was mentioned sometimes before, and I use them for my personal email too.
- theschmed 4y agoI agree. I wouldn’t use them with a purelymail.com email address since I’m not sure they’re gonna be around forever, but for use with a custom domain the service works great for now
- q-base 4y agoFastmail.com I have been a very happy customer for several years. I even really like their web interface.
- unsupp0rted 4y agoI wish they had a Black Friday deal. It’s time for me to re-subscribe.
- heresjohnny 4y agoAbsolutely terrific service, indeed. In terms of privacy you’re probably better off at Protonmail from a government surveillance perspective, but in my opinion you’ll pay with usability that way.
- helloworld11 4y agoIm still not sure why a company that's hosted in Australia, with a thoroughly awful legal system for digital privacy by the standards of other western-style democracies, is recommended so much. I can understand its other benefits and have no direct criticism of the company itself, but that legal detail isn't a minor one for anyone who wants to leave behind Google's pervasively privacy-parasitic garbage.
- holigot 4y agoAs far as I understand it isn't that interesting. Most of the laws don't apply to Fastmail. Maybe I'm wrong. Nice article/information from Fastmail can be found here: https://www.fastmail.help/hc/en-us/articles/1500000280221-How-Fastmail-provides-a-secure-service https://www.fastmail.help/hc/en-us/articles/1500000280221-Ho...
- dave4420 4y agoJust out of interest, what’s your objection to Protonmail?
- theCrowing 4y agoI switched after that news https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28427259 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28427259 way to much work with their bridge if they log.
- LWIRVoltage 4y agoJust an FYI, https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/proton-wins-appeal-in-swiss-court-over-surveillance-laws/47052196 https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/proton-wins-appeal-in-swiss-cou... Not sure if you followed that, but they fought it tooth.and nail, and were forced to do that legally in the meanwhile- but WON The fight finally, and can't be forced to log via legal mechanisms as the authorities attempted
- joshxyz 4y agojust the price lol their monthly for allowing custom domains is $10 i was looking for fastmail (which i forgot the name why i posted) which costs $5
- cagdasalagoz 4y agotutanota.com btw protonmail allows you to link custom domain but you have to be a premium member. If you're looking something that will give every feature for free while keeping your data safe. Good luck with that.
- actualwitch 4y agoYes, if op wants encrypted mail there aren't many other options around, and I think there was some standard that allows proton <-> tutanota e2ee communication, but I don't remember its name.
- fckthisguy 4y agoProton's encryption is just PGP, so it works with any other provider out of the box. I prefer that over proprietary solutions. I think you can get tutanota to interop with Proton if you use Proton's relay.
- russianGuy83829 4y agomigadu
- hr0m 4y agoI am looking for the same thing. A colleague has recommended mailbox.org
- mdrzn 4y ago+1 to Fastmail
- fractallyte 4y agoI recommend Runbox. I've been with them for a few years now, with absolutely no complaints. Reliable, flexible, and nicely priced. And based in Europe! https://runbox.com/ https://runbox.com/
- daggersandscars 4y agoI've had good experiences with Fastmail and Apple. If you're paying for iCloud, Apple also supports custom domains and this integrates with Apple's mail apps, allowing you to send mail as any of the hosted accounts without additional configuration.
- theCrowing 4y agoDoes iCloud do catchall?
- marcus0x62 4y agoYes, as of very recently.
- newscracker 4y agoHere are some that allow custom domains, have IMAP support and are relatively cheap too. The list below is of the format: Provider name (Hosting Location): 1. Mailbox.org (Germany) 2. Runbox.com (Norway) 3. Mailfence (Belgium) 4. Migadu (France; company is in Switzerland) 5. Inbox.eu (Latvia) 6. Mxroute (USA)
- theCrowing 4y agozoho.com or zoho.eu if you want your data hosted in Europe. it's cheap and has a really big feature set... note taking app, exchange sync, office suite, drive...
- MisterBiggs 4y agoBeen pretty happy with https://www.hey.com/ https://www.hey.com/
- FloatArtifact 4y agoIf you're not a premium member, a proton mail, how do you migrate your emails?
- replwoacause 4y agoAnother happy fastmail.com user here. Moved off of GSuite with a custom domain 3 years ago and haven't looked back.
- tinglymintyfrsh 4y agoSelf-hosting Q: Which VPS would/have you use(d) in a country like Iceland or Sweden?
