In dilapidated, systematically jobless provinces full of nothingness and not much different from a battlefield anyway, a chance to get 10x the money is a grab. People who are fleeing the country and those who are willingly joining the ranks are from very different social classes, but because class system in Russia is very regional, these people barely ever meet each other so both sides can be surprised with the other's behaviour.
