“Twitter as a business could have kept running in exactly the same form he acquired it in - he could have been moderately successful had he just left everything alone.”
This is not correct. The acquisition added a huge debt load. That’s what driving these decisions.
- MBCook 4y agoIt ran just fine, and took in money. It needed to take in more money, and the huge amount of debt made that worse. But there was nothing technical that needed immediate fixing, but that seems like what he’s so heavily focused on now. Like finding the one evil line of source code will cut infrastructure costs 10 fold and make Twitter more popular than ever.
- snoot 4y ago> It needed to take in more money, and the huge amount of debt made that worse. This grossly understates it. The interest payments alone on the new debt are > $1BN per year. It ran just fine before the acquisition. After the acquisition it didn’t just need to take in more money - it needs an order of magnitude more. His decisions don’t seem likely to produce this, but business as usual just wasn’t an option either.
