Twitter Is Going Great
- quelsolaar 4y agoGive it time. Twitter has been miss managed for years, it needs a shake up and its going to take time for the peaces to fall in to place. For all the people who say Elon is out of his depth, remember all the people who said he was out of his depths when making a car company, or trying to go to space. Many fortunes have been lost betting against him. Will he succeed? I have no idea, but I would not bet against him in the long run.
- noja 4y ago*self-driving car company. He hasn't delivered on that yet.
- peter-m80 4y agoAnd still not in mars
- quelsolaar 4y agoNo, you see engineering takes time. Getting people in to orbit took 15 years, it took at least 10 to get mass production of electric cars up and running. All those where late but he did it.
- alphabettsy 4y agoMy opinion is that engineering problems are easier to solve than social problems. Even easier when you have billons to throw at them. Much of what Musk has gotten himself into with Twitter are in the realm of social problems. For all his positive qualities, he strikes me as having low emotional intelligence. We’ll see what happens.
- kaba0 4y agoNo, people he hired did it. That’s like… all the difference.
- defrost 4y agoThat cave-sub was well out of depth, and portage, and ability to navigate tight turns. I'm pretty sure Elon put more thought into that than his buy twitter impulse.
- shagie 4y agohttps://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1514698036760530945 https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1514698036760530945 Note that the price was $50.00 + 420¢ ... and a poll. He was memeing and gets side eyes from the SEC when he starts talking about stock prices.
- beardyw 4y agoI was feeling sorry for those folks who lost their jobs, but then I thought - Elon's ok.
- kaba0 4y agoWell, he is so out of depth regarding engineering a car/rockets that the only thing he can possibly do is to hire some smart guys who work for him. He literally only has a single patent for tesla, a goddamn door handle. (Oh, also, they are feeding on government subsidies) Twitter is a much different category where you “only” have to manage people, there is no one stopping his narcissistic personality from doing harm and here is the result. Why do you give him the benefit of doubt? It could have easily been a CEO-swap without any worry from the outside. But he posted controversial shit instantly, made up a ridiculously stupid paid-verification which removed the trust from accounts, fired plenty of its talent base wrongfully! having to rehire many of them at presumably insane costs, while also don’t forget about severance. He is just terribly incompetent at his job, if that is anything more than being an ATM machine.
- quelsolaar 4y agoSo if all he did was hire some people smart people. Why havent ever other person with a bank account started a sucsessful car/rocket company? The opotunities he has had has been open to a lot of people. Besos has a lot of money and smart people but that doesnt seem to be enough to go to orbit.
- kaba0 4y agoI don’t know, who started a car/rocket company in question? Because they were both bought by Elon after the fact, including the “founding” title (because, narcissism/selling this image of successful CEO)
- quelsolaar 4y agoYou are right. Elon didnt file the incorporation papers, he only took it from a grarage startup to the worlds most valuable car maker. Clearly the founder who never shiped a car is is the one who deserves credit, not Elon.
- kaba0 4y ago
- Comevius 4y agoHe is constantly out of his depth, just got lucky with the government subsidies and the right people at the right time, like Gwynne Shotwell. What even he is doing with Twitter at a time when Volkswagen and the rest of the auto industry is easting Tesla's lunch. Most CEO's are practically invisible, busy managing their company, this man has multiple companies and yet he keeps posting meme pictures all day long.
- 1letterunixname 4y agoWishful thinking. There's a difference between a planned and deliberate reorganization, and injecting infinite chaos. Chaos and stress don't produce better results for knowledge work; it just makes the most qualified people leave and invites horrible MSPs like TCS and Taos to come in and keep the crap barely working.
- 411111111111111 4y agoTo be fair, Twitters user engagement has probably skyrocketed with all these controversies. It’s probably doing better than ever before by internal statistics. I am pretty sure all our armchair speculations are pretty pointless and we’ll have to see how it’ll play out over the next months/years
- kaba0 4y agoI mean, that’t pretty much just catastrophe-tourism at this point. 8 dollars won’t save Twitter, and advertisers are pulling out en mass and they won’t come back because it is pretty worthless to pay for ads if they are indistinguishable from the funny joke accounts’ content. And I know that was just discontinued, but I guess it’s too late.
- someNameIG 4y ago> For all the people who say Elon is out of his depth He recently tweeted "did it 4 da lulz" then deleted it
- dmarchand90 4y agoI've really liked elon for a long time but I've lost my last bit of respect for him when he bought twitter. Tesla and SpaceX are handling the biggest problems of our age. So why is elon wasting his time running this chatter- factory
- rvieira 4y agoTo be honest, I don't understand some people's "faith" in Twitter. In my view, Twitter (like all social media) is completely replaceable. There's nothing about it, technology wise, that can't be copied with some infrastructure, some money and a some dev work. Like all social media, Twitter's golden goose is the user and mind share. If they start losing net accounts or momentum, it's never good news. Twitter's problems seem to be precisely growing negative user perception.
- riffic 4y agoI've always said the site was in no way immune to be a future member of this list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_defunct_social_networking_services https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_defunct_social_network...
- wooger 4y agoGrowing negative user perception has been ongoing for 5+ years, but mainly due to insane partisan censorship over particular pet issues by the US twitter staff like gender stuff. Hundreds of women banned from twitter for stating their reasonable objections to political proposals.
- yunty 4y agoThe really insidious thing about the censorship around gender activism is that it removes the language required to form a reasonable objection. To take one example, when trans-identifying male Lia Thomas won a women's swimming competition earlier this year, it was a very controversial topic that was much discussed on Twitter, with the gender critical point of view being that men shouldn't be permitted to compete in women's sports, and he was essentially cheating by doing so, due to his physical advantage of being male. However, if you referred to him as anything other than a woman, or used pronouns other than "she" or "her", this would get your tweet removed and even your account suspended, sometimes permanently. Even though it entirely undermines the argument against his participation. Not that this is a new phenomenon or only applies to Twitter - gender critical feminists have been warning about this type of linguistic sabotage for quite some years now, e.g. https://fairplayforwomen.com/pronouns https://fairplayforwomen.com/pronouns
- ghusto 4y agoI've never been a fan of Musk, but even I'm getting tired of this constant stream negative nonsense. I have a feeling it's just part and parcel of engaging with people who are part of Twitter and care about it. In other words, now that those people are part of our conversations, it's all turned to shite. As somebody here already said: It's win/win; either Twitter implodes and does the web a service, or it becomes better. I couldn't care less either way, so I'm happy.
- taolegal 4y agoTwitter was a leftist bastion. They censored opponents and favorable media for/of opponents. Everyone said “it’s a private company that can do whatever it wants” and “free speech needs limits.” Now it’s ruled by someone apparently not actively biased towards leftists (though actually a liberal). And everyone seemingly has soured and claims it’s a bad company now abusing power. It’s hard for me to see this in any other way than leftists scorned that they can’t arbitrarily abuse their opponents anymore through an important private company.
- Eddy_Viscosity2 4y agoHe's banning people who make fun of him. I'd call that abuse of power. Especially after all his words about how bad censorship is. So instead of a leftist bastion (which I disagree was true, but that's beside the point), it will now be a bastion of things that Elon finds favorable. Is that better? Depends on your overlap of favorability with Elon's I guess. The use of the N-word on Twitter is up 500% since the take-over, and leftists probably don't like that much -- so looks like he's 'winning'.
- taolegal 4y ago> He's banning people who make fun of him. the policy is about banning anyone who's impersonating someone else. there's a major bot issue with accounts pretending to be others, and people are playing coy about it specifically doing this as a political stunt to show how bugaboo Elon is abusing free speech (an issue they generally only argue in favor of when it affects themselves)
- Eddy_Viscosity2 4y agoHe was also banning 'clearly marked' parody accounts, that were targeting him anyway. This is in line with his pettiness, like cancelling a blogger's car order because he didn't like the blog, accusing people critical of him of being pedos and so on. The real political stunt was Musk pretending he cared more about free speech than being vindictive against his critics.
- riffic 4y agounflag post please.
