Having big corporations contribute to projects is totally great! The incentives are just fucky when they control them.
My favorite example: VSCode is a great piece of software, but almost half of it is actually only available in a proprietary build from Microsoft's website that contains telemetry.
- thiht 4y ago> but almost half of it is actually only available in a proprietary build from Microsoft Which half? VSCodium works great, so I'd go as far to say 99% of VSCode is actually open source (the name and icons being exceptions). You cannot say proprietary extensions are half of VSCode.
- pjmlp 4y agoI find so ironic that most people that complain about telemetry are also big Google Docs users, or Web apps in general. Not necessarly your case, but surely for most complainers.
