It’s bad business practice to put energy towards something that doesn’t serve your mission because you lose focus and discipline.
For the things they do invest in, Apple puts a lot of energy in the user experience because they believe that there are business benefits to doing so. This is true of most well-run companies. Generally speaking, our economic system works out well because the incentives of businesses align with the incentives of the consumer.
- howinteresting 4y agoWhat a crock of nonsense. The interest of the consumer would be better served by not sending potato quality images and videos to Android users.
- wvenable 4y agoAs Tim Cook would say, if they don't want potato quality images they could just buy an iPhone.
- howinteresting 4y agoIndeed, confirming that he's a smarmy asshole who lacks empathy.
- dwaite 4y agoWhat's the problem in using a third party messaging app, vs messaging systems locked to platforms like iMessage on iPhone or Google RCS on Android?
- howinteresting 4y agoAmericans are, to a first approximation, lazy and won't download another app. However I hear things are changing. Plenty of teens on Discord.
- Spivak 4y agoDo they send worse images than an Android would send over MMS? Because even on Android I wouldn’t send pictures over MMS because they’ll be scaled down.
- howinteresting 4y agoYes. iOS sends videos as 3gpp, Android as MP4. https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/rjg47l/google_messages_sends_mms_video_in_much_higher/ https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/rjg47l/google_mess... Neither is great but Android MMS is much better. And of course RCS is better still. And Google Messages let's you automatically upload videos to Google Photos and let you share them with a link. The affordances to send high quality video are significantly better on Android. (I don't use any of the above, instead preferring to use Signal.)
- aussieshibe 4y agoThis is exactly what the gp comment was saying though, isn't it? Apple doesn't care about their users, except insofar as keeping users happy can make Apple money. In cases where keeping users happy can't make Apple money, they don't care about their users.
- dwaite 4y agoAndroid users aren't Apple users. Keeping Apple users happy when it doesn't make them money directly may have strategic importance (which is why iMessage exists in the first place) Keeping Android users happy when it doesn't make them money is a distraction. Thats why they have iTMS and Apple Music and Apple TV and iCloud ported to other platforms - because those front paid services.
