Twitter is raising the Blue subscription price from $2.99 to $4.99 monthly
- smoldesu 4y agoFor only $6/month, you can buy a managed instance of Mastodon[0] with 20gb of media storage. For an additional $1/year, you can buy a custom domain to use with it. Obviously everyone isn't going to switch because of this, but if you're a microblogging nerd who wants the most out of their platform, Mastodon is looking increasingly appealing. - CameronNemo 4y agoFor an additional $1/year, you can buy a custom domain to use with it. Do you mean $1/month? Most .com, .org, and .net domains I've seen cost ~$12/year.
- smoldesu 4y agoOops, yeah. Forgot to do my math right :p
- paxys 4y agoYou can type your posts for free on the Notes app on your phone and it will have the same effect. The value of Twitter is in the network and eyeballs, not the tech behind it.
- eatonphil 4y agoAnd also that it's moderated. Just like how we've got dang and company on HN, you've got to have good paid moderators.
- smoldesu 4y agoThere's nothing to moderate if you're the only one on your instance.
- anecdotal1 4y agoYes there is. You have to spend the time blocking lots of servers full of crazy people who just spout offensive stuff at you because the entire server is full of people who dogpile on anything they see.
- noobermin 4y agoThis is a harsh and bad comparison, it will certainly not have the "same effect" because a small audience, even one you can count on one hand, is larger than zero.
- fazfq 4y agoYou can go to a crowded place and send the notes via airdrop to everybody who crosses you.
- paxys 4y agoSharing individual iOS notes with others will probably result in greater reach than convincing them to join your Mastodon instance and keep track of your posts. Self-hosted Mastodon might be a good product by itself, but people need to stop pushing it as a Twitter substitute because that's not what it is.
- smoldesu 4y ago> Sharing individual iOS notes with others will probably result in greater reach than convincing them to join your Mastodon instance and keep track of your posts. The same could be said about Twitter, just with more bots and advertisements.
- cercatrova 4y agoNot really. The Twitter account I have has something like X thousand followers, which is certainly more than I'd be able to share around with iOS notes.
- mduggles 4y agoWhy bother, it doesn’t remove ads.
- mvanbaak 4y ago"old" news: Jul 29 2022
- thomascgalvin 4y agoPeople were paying for Twitter?
- abc_lisper 4y agoIt's 20 bucks not 5 bucks.
- ianburrell 4y agoIt's $5/mo for Twitter Blue and rumored $20/mo for verification.
- tsol 4y agoSo this is the same thing as having a check mark? It's a good idea, I don't know why they didn't charge for that before
- vibrio 4y agoGenuine question: I don’t understand who the typical customer is for having the blue check. How does it make one’s experience better? Does it lead to more followers because it provides more credibility?
- chrisfrantz 4y agoThis is from July 28
- ksaj 4y agoIf you pay either price every month as a subscription, what does that $20 verification thing do other than expensively add a little graphic after your name? Having a subscription at all assumes they already know who you are via however you pay it every month. Remember the gem scam on iphone? This is that all over again, since all you get out of it for the extra money is a checkmark graphic.
