Erm, don't think many of Facebook's "moderators" in India are paid any better.
I think most BPO/call-centre jobs pay as much (it's about the GDP-per-capita of "rich" states like Karnataka).
- KaiserPro 4y agoI mean thats not really an argument is it? forcing people to do shitty jobs that make that unwell, for shit all cash isn't a great look. Arguing that its ok because they make slightly above the median income for the place they live, even less so.
- dzhiurgis 4y agoMaybe we should blame people who produce horrible content instead?
- ceejayoz 4y agoIn many cases, that's a shitty, low-paying job too. https://restofworld.org/2021/the-chinese-content-farms-behind-factory-tiktok/ https://restofworld.org/2021/the-chinese-content-farms-behin... Same for the folks at click farms boosting those pieces of content. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/aug/02/click-farms-appearance-online-popularity https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/aug/02/click-far... It's fascinating to me how many people really want to blame the cogs in the machine over the designers and owners of it.
- IshKebab 4y agoThose aren't creating traumatising content though. Totally different thing.
- ceejayoz 4y agoThen I'm at a loss as to what the parent poster wanted; acts of child porn and murder and whatnot are already illegal and fairly regularly punished. Those folks get plenty of (fair) blame.
- IshKebab 4y agoYeah their comment made no sense really. Maybe they wanted to focus more on catching the perpetrators rather than filtering out their effects?
- hbgl 4y agoPeople who moderate TikTok are not slaves.
- ceejayoz 4y agoIt's possible to get exploited without being a literal slave, though. There's a vast spectrum between "I'm Bill Gates and nothing is ever out of my reach" and "slavery". Folks in poor nations with few prospects being exploited for their cheap labor often gets uncomfortably close to the slavery end of things.
- Bakary 4y agoIf you end up watching traumatizing content for a low salary it does mean that the cards you were dealt at birth weren't so great. Perhaps they could have been in a better place if they pulled up their bootstraps but I'd challenge any SWE here to do well with the same starting circumstances
