The RedMonk Programming Language Rankings [Q2 2022]
- metadat 4y agoThese results are so different from what I'd expect, but I spend a lot of, probably way too much, time on HN. Why is HN so warped? Are we a giant feckless echo chamber when it comes to favored programming languages and trends? If we trust this report, reality is very different from what is projected throughout this forum.
- labrador 4y agoThe results haven't changed much so I'm not sure what you expect. Perhaps you're used to Tiobe which is very inaccurate imho. The only surprise here for me is Dart has moved up significantly.
- alexvoda 4y agoOr perhaps you are used to the most liked ranking by Stack Overflow. That one is very different. As a popularity ranking, it is entirely unsurprising to see JavaScript then Python then Java and PHP then C#.
- IshKebab 4y agoThe HN audience is mostly experienced developers who have learnt multiple languages so you aren't going to find so much Python, PHP, JavaScript (as opposed to Typescript) etc. because people here have had time to find better options. Also those languages are old and boring so people don't talk about them as much. The one that really surprises me is Ruby. I thought it was basically dead.
- isitmadeofglass 4y agoI’m curious, what reality do you feel HN projects? Which languages did you expect further up and which further down?
- metadat 4y agoWith the HN projection, Rust and Go would rank significantly higher.

- alexvoda 4y agoI think some of the outliers are interesting: - top left corner, VB.NET. It is probably used frequently enough in businesses but nobody cares to release projects on GitHub. Is it poor version control culture? Is is a business only language? - bottom right corner, Roff. Probably plenty of manpages
