Moody’s downgrade UK outlook to negative
- bell-cot 4y agoSigh. It almost makes one wish for the (rather mythical) Good Old Days - when King Charles could have ordered that the current wretched lot of politicians be drawn & quartered. With their replacements given front-row seats at the spectacle, "as a sign of the King's favor". And reminder that they'd best prove worthy of said royal favor.
- sph 4y agoOr when people took to the streets when stuff got bad. I feel the modern citizen feels so powerless to change the status quo that the political circus is an accidental form of entertainment we use to escape from the reality of it. Panem et circenses.
- benj111 4y agoPlus the fact that the Tories have been busy criminalising protest.
- benj111 4y agoWell I'd settle for the good old days when it wasn't just old people that voted, or the good old days when a party had the good grace to implode whilst out of power, or the good old days when Europe was the Tories whipping boy rather than its own party. Id even settle for the good old days when Johnson wasn't still seen as a viable candidate. Still!
- tjpnz 4y agoI could see the young people of Scotland voting again given independence is back on the agenda. I wonder what it will feel like for the brexiteers to be on the other end of a simple majority.
- sph 4y agoIt's hard as a Millenial or Zoomer to believe your vote counts. I would say it is delusional. In my 35 years, living in two countries (Italy and UK) I have never experienced a government that wasn't deep dysfunctional and rotten to the core. Not even one. Older people keep saying my vote counts and this politician will fix all the issues, and I just want to laugh in their face. The younger people from the zoomer generation from what I understand have just given up. What even is the point?
- benj111 4y agoI don't buy that argument. The Brexit vote was single issue, and young people still didn't go out to vote. By not voting you just make the problems worse
- SideburnsOfDoom 4y agoPaul Krugman called this "the moron risk premium" https://twitter.com/paulkrugman/status/1573656086716071937 https://twitter.com/paulkrugman/status/1573656086716071937 https://www.ft.com/content/08908266-cc47-4cda-b8d4-97a8ac433a6d https://www.ft.com/content/08908266-cc47-4cda-b8d4-97a8ac433...
- Proven 4y agoAs in "risk premium as determined by a moron"? The UK's situation is no different from continental redistributionist disasters - big government, too much spending. The only reason why the US hasn't fallen to that level is that the dollar is a major reserve currency.
- netsharc 4y agoBTW the FT link says it seems to have been coined by a Dario Perkins...
- bumpian 4y agoWhy people still trust these ratings from Moody's, S&P, etc? Did we forget what happened in 2008? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwdo17GT6sg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwdo17GT6sg
