Putin declares martial law in annexed regions of Ukraine
- Max-Ganz-II 4y agoThere's no law in Russia, or within the power of Russia, except for the wishes of the State, or the organs of State. In such a situation, to announce the decleration of martial law is rather deceptive : the State already wields absolute power. It is I think intended in part to play to audiences who do not know this. As it is, I suspect now what comes is mass and forced deportation of Ukrainians in the face of the advance of the Ukrainian army; Lord knows what is happening to these poor people once they are shipped into Russia. Such deporations are ongoing in the territories which were occupied earlier in the war. The other horror is military slavery, where Ukrainians are forced into the Russian army, to fight the Ukrainians who are pushing the Russians out of the Ukraine. As you can imagine, their military value is slight; I am hoping most of these people are able to surrender, but it is not always possible, and an artillery shell blows you apart whether or not you were forced into the army.
- fnordian_slip 4y agoEven though I am European, and this war is practically at my doorstep, it's still hard to believe that it is actually happening. If anyone had predicted it 10 years ago, I would not have believed it, even though I already had a rather low opinion of Putin. The fact that he just continues with this lunacy keeps shocking me. Though it must be incredibly hard for a dictator to admit that you overplayed your hand, I can not wrap my mind around the fact that this is not the preferable alternative to the current situation, no matter the cost to his reputation as a strong leader etc.
- netfortius 4y agoThere are folks closer to the matter (geographically and historically tied to what Russians have been doing in that area for decades) who are concerned that evacuation of places like Kherson is actually indicative of the worst case scenario, next step putin delusional aggressiveness: tactical nuclear arms use.
- amai 4y agoZelenskyy declared martial law for Ukraine already in February. Putin now declaring martial law in some areas of Ukraine is not only redundant, but ridiculous. Ukraine should declare martial law in parts of Russia in response, maybe starting with Kaliningrad.
