A turbine prototype just broke a 24-hour wind power world record
- guerby 4y ago"Siemens Gamesa’s 14-222 DD offshore wind turbine prototype has, according to the Spanish-German wind giant today, set a world record for the most power output by a single wind turbine in a 24-hour period: 359 megawatt-hours. (...) "The SG 14-222 DD is a 14 megawatt (MW) offshore wind turbine with a capacity of up to 15 MW with Power Boost." 359 MWh in 24h is 14.958 MW average output, out of the 15 MW "boost mode" that's about 100% "boost" capacity factor for the day :).

- FullyFunctional 4y agoThis is awesome; clearly wind favors scale. I wonder what the cost of building 14-220 DD is compared to solar panels of the same nominal wattage. I assume wind turbines are relatively simpler technology and thus more cost effective.
- guerby 4y agoAccording to : https://www.statista.com/statistics/506756/weighted-average-installed-cost-for-offshore-wind-power-worldwide/ https://www.statista.com/statistics/506756/weighted-average-... "In 2021, the cost of installed offshore wind energy worldwide averaged 2,858 U.S. dollars per kilowatt, a year-over-year decrease of over 12 percent." (graph of price decrease shown) According to: https://www.ny-engineers.com/blog/breaking-down-the-price-of-solar-power-systems https://www.ny-engineers.com/blog/breaking-down-the-price-of... "100 MW Fixed Tilt Utility $0.83 / watt" so $830 per kW. - Symbiote 4y agoThe sea around Scotland is where these enormous turbines will first be installed. [1] says in the UK, offshore wind power is now slightly cheaper than on-land wind or solar. I assume the economics depends very much on the expected amount of wind and sun in a particular location, as well as the expected demand at those times. But until that red gas line is close to zero when the blue wind line is very high, it should make sense to build more wind turbines and solar panels [2]. - Schroedingersat 4y agoSolar modules + inverters are about 40c a nameplate watt (or $1.60 per net watt in good conditions). The land, installation and maintenance roughly adds half to as much again. Onshore wind is about the same TCO. More up front cost for the turbine and construction at around $1-1.3 per nameplate watt. Offshore is about double. Wind has substantial advantages in terms of being uncorrellated with other wind and anti-correllated with solar.
- thefourthchime 4y agoHow often and what kind of maintenance do these things need? Being out in the sun and saltwater is hard on anything, especially things with moving parts.
- thehappypm 4y agoThe moving parts are hundreds of feet up, which helps.
- prottog 4y agoRotor diameter of 222 meters! That's almost exactly three Boeing 777-300ERs back to back; or nearly 10 acres of cross-sectional area being covered by the blades as they rotate. How amazing.
- thehappypm 4y ago359 MWh is an INSANE amount of energy. That’s roughly enough energy to power an average American house for 30 years.
- winrid 4y agoVery happy to see we can now build recyclable blades that work.
