If 100% of my work was on OSS, I would add probably 10x the value to everyone else's life than I bring at my job. I'm hardly alone in this - most jobs are useless. As such, it is logical for it to bum you out - if only the folks that are capable of making everyone's lives better could be able to do so while being fed, sheltered and cared for medically. It would make society as a whole better, even if it is just due to the fact that we would have to acknowledge that bullshit jobs are not worth more than actual human value.
