I had this is a huge way with my previous employer. Everything about the code base was terrible, every choice that could be made along the way was the wrong one. Even the (CVS) tagging strategy for releases was just horrible. I really dreaded getting up in the morning because I knew the entire day was going to be a slog through the mud of bad design and worse code. I'm way happier now, working for a company that has thoughtful people doing the bulk of the design work.
