The use of recency as a proxy for quality or usefulness is one of the more perverse trends of recent years, but it's understandable. There is just so much of everything that a strong demand is created for any method of filtering. Of course I have to add that it does matter a lot for certain types of software. Anything that interacts with ever-changing APIs, hardware specs, and protocols needs to be kept up at least frequently enough to stay useful.
