The nuclear policy America needs
- anovikov 4y agoIt's dead simple: there is no time for any new nuclear left. Building a nuclear power plant takes anywhere from 20 years to infinity in the free world due to the regulations. Moreover, even in totalitarian countries where there is no red tape and single authority can decide on life and death of millions on serfs, it takes decades: it took 13.5 years from get-go to start of the first reactor of Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant. That puts us to 2036. By that point certainly, electricity will be fully solved with renewables alone.
- ZeroGravitas 4y ago> In certain circles, being pro-nuclear is a way to be climate-aware and pro-science while also signaling a kind of masculine tough-mindedness and hippie-punching attitude Followed not long after by: > I am in fact more pro-solar than conventional liberals. I want to stamp out the anti-solar NIMBYs who elevate saving random trees or historic preservation over generating more solar power. Seems a bit self-unaware. > If [new nuclear tech] works out, the benefits could be very large simply because energy is really good, and if you want more and more energy it’s useful to have sources that don’t take up as much space as the endless proliferation of utility-scale solar projects. And it looks like he was lying about being really pro-solar as well. Wait, this is the same guy suggesting we should use government money to further subsidize fossil fuels? https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2022-09-11/biden-should-promise-to-give-big-oil-a-bailout https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2022-09-11/biden-... > Biden Should Give Big Oil a Bailout > To insure against future spikes in the price of oil, the administration needs to encourage investment in production now. I'm speechless.
