You should look at the GDP per capita of the US compared to literally every other country in the last 10 years.

The GDP per capita is high still because the returns from investments made many decades ago (in fact, almost a century ago!) are bearing fruit. I'm talking about highways, infrastructure and research/development. But those investments will eventually be completely consumed. So what investments are being made today that would replace it? IBM was still very profitable when their downfall began.
