Cool, now compare it to an M2
- corralina 4y agoFor some people comparing to Apple is useless - Macbooks could be a thousand times faster and last for a year on battery, they still would be 100% useless to me because they don't run the software I need on a daily basis.
- theonemind 4y agoWhat software do you find irreplaceable?

- kcb 4y agoPerformance wise, quite favorable. Battery and power consumption, not so much.
- senttoschool 4y agoPerformance wise, the M2 is still faster.
- cbg0 4y agoIt isn't https://nanoreview.net/en/cpu-compare/intel-core-i7-12700h-vs-apple-m2 https://nanoreview.net/en/cpu-compare/intel-core-i7-12700h-v...
- senttoschool 4y agoM2 is faster. Faster ST, GPU, video editing, AI and at significantly lower power. It loses on MT but that's because we don't have the M2 Pro/Max yet. M2 is just the entry-level SoC being compared to Intel's very best. Also, try running the benchmarks unplugged. Intel's performance will instantly drop by 25 - 50%. M2 will stay exactly the same.
- cbg0 4y agoI don't disagree with you that M2 is more efficient, but let's not move goal posts after saying "Performance wise, the M2 is still faster.".
- senttoschool 4y agoI didn't move the goal post. M2 is faster in ST, GPU, AI, and video editing. It's slower on MT. To me, the M2 is overall faster. Especially when unplugged which will cause Alder Lake to significantly drop in performance. What is your definition of faster?
- GeekyBear 4y ago> Especially when unplugged which will cause Alder Lake to significantly drop in performance. At least in a laptop, it's not just when you unplug the laptop that performance drops. You've also got to have enough volume in the laptop to shoehorn in a major cooling system if you're going to keep the P series processors from throttling. For instance, Lenovo's thin and light ThinkPad X1 Yoga has two fans but still throttles: >Unfortunately, the laptop got uncomfortably hot in its Best performance mode during testing, even with light workloads. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/07/review-lenovos-thinkpad-x1-yoga-gen-7-looks-good-but-feels-warm/5/#h2 https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/07/review-lenovos-think... Or the Dell XPS 13 Plus: >the XPS 13 Plus’ fan was really struggling here because, boy oh boy, did this thing get hot. After a few hours of regular use (which, in my case, is a dozen or so Chrome tabs with Slack running over top), this laptop was boiling. I was getting uncomfortable keeping my hands on the palm rests and typing on the keyboard. Putting it on my lap was off the table. https://www.theverge.com/23284276/dell-xps-13-plus-intel-2022-review https://www.theverge.com/23284276/dell-xps-13-plus-intel-202... Intel's P series chips in a device without a massive heat sink and fans can't hit those high clocks that their performance benchmarks rely on.
- BaseballPhysics 4y agoCool, now show me upgrading your M1 to an M2.

- Dylan16807 4y agoI think you misread the question? They asked how you upgrade an M1 to an M2. In this scenario there are no x86 chips.
- nixgeek 4y agoI think 18 days ago you might have said something to the the tune of you’d never do business with Apple again. You changed your mind fast. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32188366 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32188366
- xeromal 4y agoThis is ridiculous. Why do people behave this way?

- lhl 4y agoA YouTuber, Luke Miani, gave it a try recently. Of course it doesn't work, but it was interesting to see that mechanically everything fits and the chassis is of course practically identical, but it doesn't work because FU that's why: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_jckhYfGBw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_jckhYfGBw No surprises there. Apple also firmware locks the swappable storage modules on the recent Mac Studio: https://www.engadget.com/mac-studio-ssd-software-lock-211410274.html https://www.engadget.com/mac-studio-ssd-software-lock-211410... No repairs or upgrades for their customers.
- pkphilip 4y agoThe 12th gen i7 seems to fare pretty well against M2 and gets higher scores against M2. https://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/cpu-apple_m2 https://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/cpu-apple_m2
- Rebelgecko 4y agoFrom the Cinebench scores in the linked post vs some M2 benchmarks, the M2 (score of 1695) is comparable to the bottom tier 12th gen Framework in the single core benchmark (framework scores: [1691, 1723, 1839]. On the multi-core benchmark, the M2 is significantly worse- 8714 vs [9631, 10027, 11076]. The main advantage of the M2s is probably battery life.
- senttoschool 4y agoCinebench is a terrible benchmark and heavily favors CPUs that have many slow CPU cores. Also, Cinebench is not optimized for ARM instructions. If you are buying a computer to use Cinema4D or gaming, Intel and and AMD will be better. If you're buying a computer to do just about everything else, then Apple is better.
- Rebelgecko 4y agoIf better benchmarks exist and you happen to have the scores handy, feel free to post the comparisons but I feel like my work here is done.
