A 105-mile-long city will snake through the Saudi desert. Is that a good idea?
- eternalban 4y ago> "The designs revealed today for the city's vertically layered communities will challenge the traditional flat, horizontal cities and create a model for nature preservation and enhanced human livability" This was a disappointing effort by Morphosis. It's a cruise ship stranded in a sea of sand.
- LatteLazy 4y agoIt's not real and won't actually be built. I wish we'd stop debating all these BS policies, from Boris Johnson's bridge to Ireland, to Trumps Muslim Ban to this, they're just leaders with no actual idea what to do distracting people with fairy tales.
- aurizon 4y agoEver travel out western USA? The Strip city or then a mall grew from shops on both sides of the street, followed by parallel streets and cross streets. This Saudi concept is a parametric variation. They have free desert and oil $$ - they know when the oil is gone, they are gone, so they want a linear city. The historic bull's eye city has it's problems of scarce land at the center, so they want to linearise add cross streets, covered electric car roads, and do on. With the right build it might work out well.
- nradov 4y agoThis is a PR stunt, nothing more. Saudi leaders are trying to change their international image in kind of a clumsy way. Despite their vast wealth, they don't have the resources to actually make this happen. If they built the city as proposed within the next 30 years then I'll eat my hat.
