Things I Have Drawn is a site in which the things kids draw are real
- Kaibeezy 4y agoPetalica Paint, formerly PaintsChainer, uses AI to colorize line drawings. It had a moment a couple of years back. I still find it amazingly satisfying. https://petalica-paint.pixiv.dev/index_en.html https://petalica-paint.pixiv.dev/index_en.html
- MiddleEndian 4y agoReminds me of Nala 2.0 https://external-preview.redd.it/hat4x2OuJAzKx1-NAookXNlPigZyWiBxUBlnoCBH8aQ.jpg?width=519&auto=webp&s=31102dfe1ad0f4924a2c76b8c5080912f689ceb4 https://external-preview.redd.it/hat4x2OuJAzKx1-NAookXNlPigZ...
- kretaceous 4y agoOT: Please don't use hover interactions for displaying titles on mobile phones. I thought this was a gallery and then realised I had to tap and check what these are.
- nycdatasci 4y agoReminds me of: https://ai.facebook.com/blog/using-ai-to-bring-childrens-drawings-to-life/ https://ai.facebook.com/blog/using-ai-to-bring-childrens-dra...
- loudmax 4y agoAlso see the absolutely absurd episode of Dexter's Laboratory "Dexter and Computress Get Mandark!" It was written and narrated by a six year old fan of the show and hilariously brought to life by Genndy Tartakovsky and crew.
- molbioguy 4y agoUnpopular opinion, but here goes ... The pictures are absolutely charming. This is because they distill the essential qualities of the object (from the child's POV), which is lost when you have perfect representation art. But turning them into real objects results in things that are often terrifying and grotesque, not charming. I don't believe the kids wanted their object to look like that in real life. They may be proud that their creation is realized, but I doubt their drawing is an expression of desire. They just have imperfect skills in representation. In contrast, there is imaginative art that kids excel at (e.g. a puppy with wings and a goatee). That's something that is really cool to see as a real object.
- kurupt213 4y agoThat whale/seal was very disturbing
- TedDoesntTalk 4y agoHow can I take my kid’s drawings and do the same?
- gus_massa 4y agoIn the "press" section it has a video about how he makes the images. Direct link to the exact moment of the explanation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6e1DWD_GRQ&t=165s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6e1DWD_GRQ&t=165s
- maroonblazer 4y agoHis explanation is very high level. I was hoping for more of a Photoshop tutorial specifically for these kinds of images.
- gus_massa 4y agoMe too, but that's the most detailed explanation I found.
- rossdavidh 4y agoaka "with sufficiently clever software you can turn innocent and charming children's drawings into nightmare fuel!"
- manholio 4y agoExcept the photo-manipulation suite, they are not done by software.
- rossdavidh 4y agoInteresting, so software plus sufficiently clever user of it. :)
- oliwary 4y agoIsn’t this an important plot point in the spy kids movie?
- StrictDabbler 4y agoIt's a good thing he got his fifteen minutes of fame before an AI was created to do exactly the same thing.
- elcomet 4y agoI actually thought this was an AI
- flobosg 4y agoThis reminded of a special edition of Magic: The Gathering cards which were illustrated by children, along with a professional artist’s interpretation: https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/news/secret-lair-extra-life-2021-10-20 https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/news/secret-la...
- junon 4y agoThis is adorable. Not into MtG but if I were I know I'd probably want these given the backstory.
- jamesakirk 4y agoMad Magazine did this in 1963... "If kids designed their own Xmas toys": https://imgur.com/gallery/45RGR https://imgur.com/gallery/45RGR
- isametry 4y agoIKEA went ahead and actually did it — their SAGOSKATT line of plush toys is designed by children in a drawing contest. 2020 — https://www.ikea.com/us/en/new/meet-the-2021-sagoskatt-soft-toy-crew-pub15499b50 https://www.ikea.com/us/en/new/meet-the-2021-sagoskatt-soft-... 2021 — https://www.ikea.com/us/en/files/pdf/15/b8/15b8f1cd/com20_pr-kit_sagoskatt-final.pdf https://www.ikea.com/us/en/files/pdf/15/b8/15b8f1cd/com20_pr...
- scrame 4y agoThank you! I know Maddox did a similar gag in the early 2000's, but I always think of the Mad version.
- scandox 4y agoAlso Kevin Woodcock in Private Eye in the 90s had a cartoon working on this concept. https://www.itsnicethat.com/articles/private-eye-a-cartoon-history https://www.itsnicethat.com/articles/private-eye-a-cartoon-h... https://media.itsnicethat.com/images/527cddc45c3e3c348f000ea7.format-webp.width-1440_VhVG3UGa3ojGFtrF.webp https://media.itsnicethat.com/images/527cddc45c3e3c348f000ea...
- mkl95 4y agoIt reminds me of pix2pix https://phillipi.github.io/pix2pix/ https://phillipi.github.io/pix2pix/
- redanddead 4y agoI got a lot more than what I expected
- djaychela 4y agoReminds me of these odd bikes: https://www.gianlucagimini.it/portfolio-item/velocipedia/ https://www.gianlucagimini.it/portfolio-item/velocipedia/
- melony 4y agoThe pictures look the like were generated by ML
- amelius 4y agoYes, equally disturbing.
- quickthrower2 4y agoSome sort of uncanny valley poes law of pictures.
- andybak 4y agoI wish Dall-e was more like this.
- nlh 4y agoThis is fun and cool. Also, I kind of expect that DALL-E (or, a variation thereof) will be able to do this with the right prompts. Hope he doesn't get too attached to the manual process and keeps the project going when the AI comes for his jerb ;)
- martincmartin 4y agoLike Simon in the Land of Chalk Drawings? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_in_the_Land_of_Chalk_Drawings https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_in_the_Land_of_Chalk_Dra...
- SahAssar 4y agoConsidering all the Dall-e stuff it's a bit ironic that the sites font shows the artist name "Al" almost the exact same way as it would the acronym "AI".
- herrherrmann 4y agoI was very confused by that. I only realized that Al is one of the two children when I saw his picture further down on the about page. Before that, I assumed it was an awkward attempt of claiming to have an AI “in the family”.
- pjgalbraith 4y agoI kinda did a similar thing recently with DALL-E 2, recreating a badly drawn heavy metal album cover https://twitter.com/P_Galbraith/status/1549519849558519808 https://twitter.com/P_Galbraith/status/1549519849558519808
- phs318u 4y agoHahaha - thanks for making my day \m/
- gmiller123456 4y agoClick on the "press" link on the site to see how it's done, example near the end of the video: https://www.thingsihavedrawn.com/press https://www.thingsihavedrawn.com/press
- user3939382 4y agoBudsies does this https://www.budsies.com/ https://www.budsies.com/ but they turn the drawing into a stuffed animal
