Anecdotally, I've observed that man CxO roles are created at the behest of the board or to acquire prestige for some purpose. It would not surprise me that it's easy to find highly successful people who will trade Prestige for money and WLB after a certain point in their career. Promoting internally won't buy your firm more prestige/credibility.
