I feel like some suggestions try to fix the problem without changing much.
We could instead change the roots of the problem. Education and access.
- Making public funded research publicly available (since it was paid with public funds): papers, etc. for anybody to access, legally, for free.
- Lowering the cost of textbooks.
With more people having access to the materials we might realize there are a lot of latent geniuses out there in need of a chance. The easier to get access to those papers and materials the easier it is to double check the results, too, and to cross-pollinate between fields.
- dsqrt 4y agoDOE [1], NASA [2], NSF [3] already require most research papers to be made publicly available. --- [1] https://www.osti.gov/ https://www.osti.gov/ [2] https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/funder/nasa/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/funder/nasa/ [3] https://par.nsf.gov/ https://par.nsf.gov/
- AstralStorm 4y agoThat still leaves most papers in expensive journals or available via institutional access only. (PubMed, arXiv and biorXiv help a bit with that, but it's still not enough.)
