Mapy.cz – Lesser Known but Awesome Maps
- 4cao 4y agoAs I understand the data is pulled from OSM but the presentation is indeed so much better than what https://www.openstreetmap.org/ https://www.openstreetmap.org/ looks like.
- eliaspro 4y agoMapy.cz (and their Android App) is fantastic! Due to the fact that it is based on (relatively frequently updated) OpenStreetMap data, its data density and depth is really really good and allows for quite obscure POI searches like ping pong tables, barbecue/fire pits, geographical features like valleys, etc.
- mcjiggerlog 4y agoMapy.cz is great and my go-to app for outdoors mapping and tracking hikes and bike rides. It's worse than Google Maps for search and listing, but that's fine. I'd love if something could be done for open street maps to try and create a real Google-competitor for listings, reviews etc.
- jozvolskyef 4y agoPlease remove the query parameter from the link. The map fails to load with it in the url.
- pxtail 4y agoI absolutely love this map and I'm using is frequently for kayaking, trekking and bike trips planning and during the trips as well - only thing missing is the social aspect of google maps - photos and comments for locations Google maps became really unpleasant to use for me after they changed rendering/color scheme - I'm aware that it was meant to improve maps readability for people with different color perception but for me current color scheme and flat, bland map is off-putting.
- undoware 4y agoBoth Mapy and Windy.com are from the same devs and I paid for both, and both are exquisite pieces of engineering.
- usr1106 4y agoI used them in the past when travelling in Czech. Didn't know they have global coverage. But if the data is just pulled from OSM (is it?) the country should not matter. Of course alwaays dependent on the local OSM community.
- The_Colonel 4y agoIt's a matter of taste but I consider their rendering of OSM data the best I've seen. Their apps are also just overall very good, esp. for hiking.
- iruoy 4y agoYou might want to go to https://en.mapy.cz https://en.mapy.cz instead of the link above.
- chewz 4y ago+1 I use en.mapy.cz for a couple of years now... Great topographic maps (with forrest trails, etc.) and offline download (so they are working fast even without good connection in outdoors)... Much, much more useful for me then Google or Apple Maps. And not so bloated as Google Maps. City details (ATMs, restaurants, gas stations etc.) are also decent in my area... And car nav works quite well...
- vhhn 4y agoMapy.cz even used to have a great Symbian client with navigation and all, very low battery drain. It was awasome.
- kertoip_1 4y agoGreat app for discovery of interesting places nearby, especially while walking/hiking/riding a bike. But search is quite bad. Also maps are often loading slowly, it happens that you zoom in just a little bit and entire map is gone and you need to keep waiting for it to appear
- thatbat 4y agoLooks great, its only for Checz respublic?
- t0bia_s 4y agoNot only Czech Republic.
- vojtamolda 4y agoYep. It has really cool hiking maps. Especially in Europe. Plus it is nice to use a non-Google product these days. In the Czech Republic and Slovakia we are lucky to have a company (Seznam.cz) that is able to come up with competitive products and sustain ~50% market share against Google.
- t0bia_s 4y agoI'm using it exclusively now for over 4 years. I was shocked that maps for hiking are usually more detailed than in google - for example on Isle of Skye. Over 2 years it is also absolutely fine to use it even for cars. Well... At least here in Czechia.
- openmapsguy 4y agoFirst thing I get is 2 pop ups. An ad for the app at the top and a second covering the page in Czech. All the comments are positive for an ad riddled czech maps site?
- lproven 4y agoAnglo-Irishman in the Czech Republic here. Yes, Mapy (Czech for "maps") is good and I do use it. I don't like the UI much but it's worth it for finding specific street addresses here, where it's significantly better than GMaps, and for walking/bicycling directions.
