Mob-style killings shock Netherlands into fighting descent into ‘narco state’
- ParksNet 4y ago
- kmlx 4y agosure, part of it might be this. but there are many issues in NL. for example they have different levels of citizenship. the immigrants from some of their former colonies are still treated badly. the gang shooting have been constant for decades. they still have a constant group of neo nazis parading the streets while blasting music in a rio carnival kind of style. the inequality is immense, and the integration of immigrants is poor.
- atoav 4y agoThen most rich european nations would have that precise problem.
- refurb 4y agoDidn’t Sweden have gangs throwing grenades at the police?
- tekno45 4y agodidn't ireland?
- impossiblefork 4y agoWe did, but it's mostly shootings now, as far I understand. The grenade and bomb attacks usually targeted competing criminals, with of course, some additional casualties, and are continuing, but people seem to have gotten accustomed to the news of them.

- Daishiman 4y agoYeah there was so much immigration to Sicily in the 80s...
- octopoc 4y agoThere can be more than one thing that causes mob-style killings to happen.
- Daishiman 4y agoYes, out of all the things that can be mentioned _that's_ the one OP chooses to fixate on.
- rayiner 4y agoImmigration from Sicily to the US brought an unprecedented organized crime element to the US. The Mob was conducting hits in prime time hours in the middle of Manhattan until the federal government’s massive RICO prosecutions.
- contingencies 4y agoThe Netherlands is hard to move to. I had a Dutch friend who married outside of the country ~2005 and it took an initial application plus two appeals to get his wife in (they now live there happily with kids). I think the relationship between Holland and crime is based upon its central position within western Europe, its dominance of shipping (which provides a huge inter and intracontinental logistics industry in which to hide illicit activities), and unwanted criminal outgrowths of its historically progressive and leading culture of drug acceptance. Somewhat amusingly, yet probably not causative in any way, in much the same way that Australia is often slammed jokingly as a country founded by criminals, there are aspects of truth to Holland (and Venice) being comprised in the past of social marginalia.
- hoffs 4y agoIs that how millions of drug money get made?
- aliswe 4y agoIs that what hey have/had? Serious question.
- pdimitar 4y agoI wonder why these things started escalating just now. Why not a year ago? 5 years ago? Why not 13 years from now? Quite curious.

- farnsworth 4y agoDo they have bike-by shootings? But actually I'm really curious how the transit modes of a country impact its crime.
- nec4b 4y agoThe dutch government is spending more time on virtue signaling towards eastern European countries and squashing its ideological opponents (beating up protestors and shooting farmers) than dealing with issues of their country.
