Games Done Quick “Ocarina of Time” beta showcase
- ageitgey 4y agoThat might be the most ads I've ever seen on one webpage. I think there might have been an article too, but it was hard to tell.
- paulcole 4y ago
- Scalene2 4y agoThis site was particularly egregious.
- backspace_ 4y agoThat is correct. Let's now take the road of ignore the issues and act like they dont exist.
- 6yyyyyy 4y agoWhat ads? I didn't see any ads. ;-)
- it_citizen 4y agoA childhood dream coming true 20 years later. The gamer community never ceases to amaze me.
- WJW 4y agoHoly shit, the whole "here together" thing was amazing. It's incredible how many things they managed to tie together. Very cool.
- saratogacx 4y agoThere's a good technical breakdown of what this was and how it worked on yt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBK1sq1BQ2Q https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBK1sq1BQ2Q
- clarkrinker 4y agoHere's the timestamp https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1519377241?t=12h55m30s https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1519377241?t=12h55m30s
- barrysteve 4y agoEnds at 13hr 55min. Worth it if you have an hour to burn!
- prophesi 4y agoThanks! I was trying to look for a video link in the article. I also recommend this year's Celeste and Lumione speedruns (which I sadly don't have a timestamp for, but I think both are in this same twitch video).
- jowsie 4y agoReddit has a thread of timestamps for people who missed stuff live, or if you just want to search through for games you find interesting. https://www.reddit.com/r/speedrun/comments/vlb4ff/sgdq_vod_thread_2022/ https://www.reddit.com/r/speedrun/comments/vlb4ff/sgdq_vod_t...
- re 4y agoIf you've played OOT64 before, I highly recommend watching the original twitch video (linked above by clarkrinker) before reading the theclick.gg article or watching any of the explainer YouTube videos, for the experience of seeing the beta content revealed in real-time. If you've seen any video game glitch videos with arbitrary code execution before, you can probably skip ahead to 13:07:30 if you want to save 10 minutes, past the intro and glitch setup where they're giving some basic background about how it works. After watching the video, in addition to the explanation videos that others have linked, you can check out this official FAQ from the showcase creators: https://gettriforce.link/faq https://gettriforce.link/faq
- bsaul 4y agoHow would you recommend playing this game today to someone that has never played it ?

- ace2358 4y agoThere are so many ways! What sorts of machine do you have available to play on? Pc? Switch? Do you like portable or couch or desk based gaming? I think if possible, the original game with and n64 controller is best because the controls are weird if you’re not using the original controller. The 3ds port is probably the best official HD version of the game. The pc port has oodles of improvements that kind of change the game a lot. Either way emulation if probably the best bet.
- bennysomething 4y agoPc port of ocarina of time!? I'm off to Google that (I know mario 64 got ported...)
- willis936 4y agoI would recommend breath of the wild first. I have played lots of video games and my SO has played nearly none. They played hundreds of hours of it when they had never played more than 10 hours of any other game. It's just really excellent in ways that technology did not allow in 1998.
- chongli 4y agoBreath of the Wild isn’t really anything like all of the previous Zelda games. It takes the formula of Skyrim and reskins it with Zelda characters. If you want to play a Zelda game and get the real experience then Ocarina of Time is a much more typical example of the formula, at least as far as 3D games go. For 2D games the one to start with is A Link to the Past. It solidified the franchise formula of combat, exploration, and puzzles that started with the first 2 NES games, both of which were experimental games at the time.
- pilsetnieks 4y agoUpon reading the submission title, first I tried to notice if I do smell toast right now because I know all of the words there yet it makes no sense taken together. Reading the article helped unpack this particularly egregious title, yet it let me baffled because surely websites aren't limited by column inches like the papers of yore. While no doubt those past constraints have birthed wonderful examples of brevity like "Foot Heads Arms Body" and the like, these days I see no purpose in giving one's readers a mild sense of aphasia for no reason.
- Waterluvian 4y agoThe title is fine if you’re in the audience who knows the two proper nouns and then the common GDQ concept of a “showcase” and the tech concept of a beta. Which for The Click is most of their readers.
- jannyfer 4y agoThe actual article’s title is fine for me, it’s just this HN submission’s title that’s hard to parse.
- dang 4y agoThe submitter had to shorten it to fit HN's 80 char limit. We've shortened it differently now. (Submitted title was "Games Done Quick Ocarina of Time beta showcase standing ovation")
- rkagerer 4y agoFor anyone wondering, "Foot Heads Arms Body" originates from a Guardian headline purportedly run in the 80's when Labour Party leader Michael Foot traveled to Brussels to chair a European Parliament lobby group pushing for nuclear disarmament. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Michael_Foot#Foot_Heads_Arms_Body https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Michael_Foot#Foot_Heads_A...

- lvass 4y agoThis speedrun is the most compelling argument against (safe) Rust I've seen.
- qbasic_forever 4y agoThis was super cool, it reminded me of the demoscene and demos. Programming something purely for the fun of its performance.
- schroeding 4y agoArbitrary Code Execution TAS like Triforce% or this Pokemon Yellow one[1] are more or less demos that target both the console and the "host game". I would say even some non-ACE ones like this Brainage TAS[2] are demos :D [1] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vjm8P8utT5g https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vjm8P8utT5g [2] https://youtu.be/mSFHKAvTGNk?t=1005 https://youtu.be/mSFHKAvTGNk?t=1005
- hoten 4y agoSince I'm not finding context, I think this is the gist: OoT modders programmed custom stuff into the game by using arbitrary code execution exploits, to create content that is generally considered to be "rumored" in the game, but also obviously modern stuff like BoTW demake cutscenes and Twitch messages. EDIT: actually, I think the demonstration starts by showing off legit "hidden feature" stuff existing in the original OoT game (enabling a debug mode), but quickly gets creative. This is _not_ a speedrun of an actual beta version of OoT (it's far more interesting). For more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBK1sq1BQ2Q https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBK1sq1BQ2Q
- copperx 4y agoThe title led me to believe that "Games Done Quick" was a group of people rewriting old games using modern game engines but original assets. If you're wondering the same thing: no, it's about speedruns.
- vimsee 4y agoThis is my favourite run from GDQ. It its truly impressive what they are able to do with a TAS connected to original hardware.
