The “Tire Extinguishers” Arrived in the U.S., They're After Gas Guzzler SUVs
- byoung2 4y agoMy SUV gets 20 city/25 highway but it seats 7. There are 2 seater cars with worse mileage that aren't being targeted. Doesn't seem logical.
- FeaturelessBug 4y agoI'm not sure if a movement like this is about being logical so much as making a statement about pollution in general but I feel that going after cars of oil executives would send the best message
- serverlessmom 4y agoI agree with you, this would really suck for a poor family to have to deal with
- TinkersW 4y agoI mean they are just deflating the tire, you can pump it back up with a bike pump
- bsagdiyev 4y agoIf the weight of the car on the tire sidewall doesn't cause damage... then they need new tires or risk a blowout. And a bike pump? I'm not so sure.
- smileysteve 4y agoA bike foot pump takes a standard tire about 10 pumps per psi for standard SUVs. A bike foot pump is also extremely portable and can fit in the back of a sedan. I use this for a quick pump for boat trailer tires (a few more than 10 pumps to get to the higher 65 psi), family SUVs, and my sports car (at scca race events)
- throwaway0a5e 4y ago>If the weight of the car on the tire sidewall doesn't cause damage. Myths like this get blown way out of proportion because of reddit type hand wringing and feigning of concern for virtue points and similiar behaviors that are common online. If a tire sits deflated and not driven on for a couple of days and then gets aired back up it's almost certainly going to be fine. Sure, it could be damaged but the incidences of this are so rare that at the individual level it is not really worth worrying about. >And a bike pump? I'm not so sure. Yeah. That would not be a fun time.
- jwsteigerwalt 4y agoSeems like it would work, but it does not. A bike pump will overheat and ruin the seals before you can get a fully deflated auto tire up to pressure. I’ve lost a good pump thinking I could do it.
- refurb 4y agoYes, going after the leaders who provide the main energy source for your country sounds like a brilliant idea. You should ask Germany how that's going.
- lotsofpulp 4y agoNot really. Going after the politicians who oppose increasing fossil fuel taxes and the voters who support not increasing fossil fuel taxes would send the message. Which is what the group is doing by using large vehicles commonly used for leisure as a proxy.
- Teever 4y agoWhile both of those vehicles are bad, I highly doubt that you, or the average SUV owner makes regular use of those 7 seats, or makes use of enough of them to end up making their vehicle more cost effective than 2 seater cars, and I think there are likely a hell of a lot more SUVs than 2 seater cars
- rasz 4y agoWhen was the last time you saw a full SUV? excluding commercial use (driving employees, smuggling people). Spend an hour at Walmart parking lot, this is such nonsense argument.
- jleyank 4y agoAre they diligently checking for hybrid and ev badging or just being anarchists and slashing suv tires? A set might cost $1000 or more…
- millerm 4y ago“Fortunately, the movement doesn’t urge people to cut tires or their valve stems…”
- serverlessmom 4y agoJust deflating them, not destroying them
- bsagdiyev 4y agoThe weight of the rim edge on the sidewall of the tire can damage it leading to early failure. So, yes, it does at least damage them.
- favflam 4y agoMass is mass. Space is space. SUVs take up space, killing government's return on asset when building transportation infrastructure. Energy still has to be produced to physically move 3t+ of mass around. And typically, SUVs only carry 1 person in traffic. So, that is 3t per person versus a bicycle, which is 0.020t per person.
- jleyank 4y agoLiving in Canada, an SUV is a useful vehicle in the 4-5 months it snows. Optimum would be to have a winter vs. non-winter vehicle, but that's expensive. And, most models of SUV are really station wagons with different sheet metal and larger tires - only a limited subset are built on a truck frame.
- mikewarot 4y agoThe assumption is that deflating a tire is easily reversed.... which isn't true in all cases. It also assumes someone doing this in the middle of the night won't get shot.... again not true in all cases.

- no-dr-onboard 4y agoThe thing about doing this to someone else’s vehicle in the US is that in some states a car is classified as an extension of that persons house, to which, they are entitled to defend it as such. This is really setting the stage for an interesting legal case in which a person with a knife harms another person’s vehicle and gets shot or assaulted.
- cbozeman 4y agoI'm very much looking forward to these people coming to Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex to do this. They'll be quickly educated on just how many suburbanites are armed.
- wodenokoto 4y agoIt's a weird and honestly disturbing that you are looking forward to both vandalism spreading and hoping to see deadly vigilantism.
- nativespecies 4y agoWhat a sociopathic thing to comment. Seek help.
- cbozeman 4y agoThe fact you think it's "sociopathic" to defend yourself and your property against actual people with sociopathic mindsets - because if you actually think anyone in their right mind would go around slashing / deflating tires, the person who needs help here is you - is a testament to just how far not just American society has fallen, but the Western world period. I'll make it really simple for you understand. Tires cost money. Money costs time. Time is life. Therefore, when you do this, you're robbing people of their life. Don't be surprised when they shoot you dead for stealing their life.
- xerox13ster 4y agoNo one involved this is slashing tires. Bringing this up as a valid argument in reference to this just proves you didn't read the article.
- rootsudo 4y agoMany SUV's make or surpass 30 MPG, hyrbids can surpass 50. What is this thinking?
- klyrs 4y agoLike rolling coal, I'm not convinced that "thinking" is the right lens to view this through.
- windex 4y agoAs with everything these days, it's another set of extremists powered by social media high on views, likes and random outrage. I guess someone will get shot in due course and the extremists will follow suit.
- neither_color 4y agoI guess in the city they can easily target street parked vehicles. Once they're going into driveways in red states this could lead to some incidents
- mc32 4y agoThey might get away with it in rich areas, but they will not get away with it in poorer areas of cities. As a matter of fact, I bet they don't even try.
- bsder 4y agoThere is a reason why animal rights activists throw paint on old ladies wearing fur and not Hell's Angels wearing leather ...
- MerelyMortal 4y agoSo they're protesting about harming the environment... by harming the environment? How do the tires get re-inflated? Resources are wasted (harming the environment). If they actually slash tires, then more tires have to be created and disposed of which also does more harm to the environment.
- jesterson 4y agoYou cannot reason with those people, they are brainwashed and paid to be so, hence they don't think behind one hop.
- xerox13ster 4y agoSo you didn't read the article, because if you did you'd know that they specifically go around letting the air out to inconvenience people and leaving educational pamphlets--not slashing tires.
- MerelyMortal 4y agoPlease read my comment before inferring something incorrect. Letting air out of the tires harms the environment (How does air get back into the tires? By making people polute by going out of their way to fix the situation.)
- conk 4y agoIntentionally deflating someone’s tire is also considered criminal mischief in most states.
