For context, the French company Thales Group is "the 8th largest defence contractor in the world with 55% of its total sales being military sales".

They are proudly proposing that we outsource government functions to them, promoting the proprietary tech they will use to that end.
- Shadonototra 4y agoIt would be better if it was Microsoft right? You wanted it to be Microsoft right? I want my data to be stored in the US, and so the CIA can look at it whenever they want France is the only country that wants a sovereign EU Both Germany and Poland want their daddy America to handle everything for them, we seen the results ;)
- fmajid 4y agoInfoCard was actually ahead of its time and surprisingly open considering Microsoft hadn't been slapped down by the antitrust trial yet and chastened. Thales bought Gemalto, a leading maker of smart cards, SIMs and HSMs, although they had to divest their previous nCipher HSM acquisition due to antitrust concerns. Whatever the solution ends up being, it will be based on public-key encryption and the governments holding the master keys will almost certainly use HSMs to manage them, and most likely smart cards or some similar hardware security token tech like FIDO U2F. The keys are too sensitive to be help in a general-purpose computing platform because of client security flaws. The EU will in all likelihood insist that the manufacturer is from a EU country and the entire supply chain including manufacturing as well. Disclaimer: the CEO of Thales is a classmate of mine, but I haven't talked with him in over 2 decades.
- cinntaile 4y agoThales makes passports too, so there is a big chance that your passport was made by them. A more universal digital ID is a welcome change, now certain services are limited to people living in a certain country because there is no support for foreign digital IDs.
- dane-pgp 4y ago> A more universal digital ID Would you support a global digital ID, based on standards from the UN? It could even be used to store your vaccine data: https://www.telekom.com/en/media/media-information/archive/covid-19-who-commissions-t-systems-648634 https://www.telekom.com/en/media/media-information/archive/c...
- freeone3000 4y agoYes, this sounds awesome. Way better than having to re-prove myself to every country I enter.

- TacticalCoder 4y ago> They are proudly proposing that we outsource government functions to them, promoting the proprietary tech they will use to that end. Thales is one those supposedly private companies that is actually owned by the french state and french state apparatchiks. The biggest shareholder is the french state itself (26%), then other companies which, surprise, are also partially french state owned. It's all Dassault, Airbus, EADS etc.: they're all basically partially french state owned and own shares of each other. It's the military-industrial complex, french style. I mean: it's basically the government proposing we outsource government functions to the government. All that while pretending that Thales is a private company.
- belter 4y agoMaybe some citizens will help keep this under control. "Thales hacked by LockBit 2.0 group" https://gettotext.com/thales-hacked-by-lockbit-2-0-group-two-released-files-tools-and-code/ https://gettotext.com/thales-hacked-by-lockbit-2-0-group-two...
- _Algernon_ 4y ago>EU digital ID wallet How is it better that a foreign government has control of my id? Most of the EU isn't France.
- hulitu 4y agoLike US ? With Google, Microsoft, Apple and Facebook. All of them want your phone number (and IMEI, and...) and your credit card number for your own safety.
- marcosdumay 4y agoGood thing that Lucy lost her passport and not her phone.
- moffkalast 4y agoLucy has lost her phone. Unfortunately she is now not only locked out of her social life, but her job, her bank, and also her identity. How convenient.
- 0xfaded 4y agoDon't worry, the government knows where her phone is.
- francis-io 4y ago"...reminding Lucy of her mandatory vaccination" is very chilling.

- TurkishPoptart 4y agoWe knew this was coming when all the tech companies jumped on the opportunity to implement the pass sanitaire because of some virus that sort of escaped from a Wuhan biolab. No more required mRNA bullshit. No more shots. No more mandates. And no digital identity...or I'm moving to Florida.
- Dig1t 4y agoRight out of dystopian sci-fi.
- edmcnulty101 4y agoThey just casually threw mandatory vaccines out like it was nbd. What other mandatory things will I need to do for the government? Mandatory registration for war! Mandatory birth control! Mandatory drug test! Mandatory lie detector test about how honest you were on your taxes! How easy it makes it to participate in society... is a double edged sword... with how easy it is to shut them out of society with a flip of the switch if they don't comply.
- pjc50 4y ago> Mandatory registration for war! Conscription registration is already mandatory in countries that have it, and indeed was in the US when the draft existed.
- teh64 4y agoRegistration in case there is a draft is still basically mandatory in the US: https://www.sss.gov/ https://www.sss.gov/
- edmcnulty101 4y agoI know. And I like how it's difficult to register and difficult to verify if one is registered. I don't want a database that forces people to bend to the government or be shut out of society.
