Last I checked Thunderbird still doesn't support Maildir by default and is hidden behind an experimental flag with the following warning:
> We suggest you leave Maildir disabled unless you are an advanced user, willing to risk your data, and know how to back up your email before turning on Maildir and how to restore it if you run into problems.
Have they fixed that or has other things like Matrix integration taken priority over email?
- SiempreViernes 4y agoHere are the release notes: https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/102.0/releasenotes/ https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/102.0/releasen...
- encryptluks2 4y agoSo no proper Maildir support in an email client, but adding chat functionality is higher priority? Geezus... this is the Mozilla we know all too well.
- gbear605 4y agoI don’t know how it actually went down, but since it’s open source software the Matrix integration could have been written by a random developer who doesn’t work for Mozilla.
- matthewn 4y agoThunderbird has been more than "an email client" for so long that people made the exact same kind of complaint when RSS support was added. Thunderbird is a messaging/communications client, and way more people will benefit from Matrix support than would ever benefit from Maildir support. Further, my understanding from the Thunderbird team's comms is that they are very much in control of their own destiny. I don't get the sense that Mozilla has much say in Thunderbird's roadmap (or even cares) at this point.
- digisign 4y agoThat's what extensions are for.
- Dan_Sylveste 4y ago>Thunderbird is a messaging/communications client It's an email client.
- dugite-code 4y ago> but adding chat functionality is higher priority? Absolutely yes. Maildir support is a niche want, where as chat has become essential for many offices replacing email for most internal communication. Additionally the chat fuctionality has been available in one form or another for years but has been quite neglected. They have just finally extended it and cleaned it up
- encryptluks2 4y agoOffices aren't replacing email. Email has logs... Matrix is designed to not keep logs.
- dugite-code 4y agoFor internal real time coms Slack, Microsoft teams and all the other productivity chat servers sugest otherwise. You can keep logs from a Matrix server if you configure it to do so.
- inferiorhuman 4y agoThat sounds like a good feature for a chat client, not Thunderbird.
- numlock86 4y agoSurely there is a Matrix to Maildir thing or something you can use, now that it supports Matrix. Duh. /s
- user3939382 4y agoI use an extension that does Maildir in thunderbird flawlessly. I’ll post the link of you like
- ssivark 4y agoYou should post it anyway! I’m sure many silent readers are curious :-)

- beagle3 4y agoI’ve been using built in Maildir support for many years now (at least since early 2018, perhaps as early as 2013) and it works flawlessly, no extension needed. What extension are you using and why? The mail store conversion feature is still behind an about:Config swatting, though.
- bhaney 4y ago> The mail store conversion feature is still behind an about:Config swatting Do you by chance know how to actually trigger the conversion after turning this flag on? I can't seem to find a way to do it.
- beagle3 4y agoThe per-account "Message Store Type" under Tools->Accounts->(your account)->Server Settings Becomes modifiable, rather than read-only, after toggling the flag.
- encryptluks2 4y agoPlease share the link. The current implementation is too scary for my liking. I don't want to end up with deleted messages.
