Calls for Mass Walkout of Women in US - Roe vs. Wade Officially Overturned
- hirundo 4y agoI think the leak worked against a strong unified reaction. At the time of the leak it was unconfirmed, which limited the response strength. Now it has been confirmed, but the shock value has dissipated. The setback has been largely anticipated and absorbed. If the leak was a conservtive strategy it may be paying off. Or maybe there has just been enough time to recognize that the country is seriously divided on this, and any short term campaign on the issue is unlikely to shift opinions or votes much.
- jzb 4y agoThe country isn't divided on this. More than 70% of people support abortion rights - though some % of people are mixed about putting some restrictions on abortion. (Largely because the right has been successful at pushing bogus narratives around things like "partial birth abortions" which are exceedingly rare and usually a last resort for a pregnancy expected to go to term.) Opinions aren't the problem here - rule by minority is the problem.
- commandlinefan 4y ago> rule by minority But the majority can vote for an actual law protecting abortion now, rather than relying on the previous rule by minority that was keeping it legal.
- jshzglr 4y agoI support abortion rights. At the state level. So where exactly do I fall on this (70/30) polling data everyone keeps citing? Because I have to imagine there’s a fair amount of people in my camp.
- grecy 4y agoaaahhh, fully outfitted riot police are at the capitol now. I think the reaction is pretty strong! https://www.reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/vjt38x/us_capitol_police_arrive_in_full_riot_gear_to/ https://www.reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/vjt38x/us_c...
- 908B64B197 4y agoIt's a voteout that they need, not a walkout.
- iostream24 4y agoWhy not both? What about a boycott of businesses that openly gloat their support for this radical supreme courts decisions? The USA had better get its pro democratic forces moving before it’s too late.
- quantified 4y agoLysistrata
- Blackstrat 4y agoOverturning RvW isn’t a big deal. It doesn’t outlaw abortion. It simply means that the Congress and/or the legislatures of the states need to do the job they should have done 50 years ago. Even RBG thought R was decided incorrectly.
- grecy 4y agoExcept there are already multiple states that have made it illegal, stripping women of their rights.
- Blackstrat 4y agoThat’s why it’s a legislative issue. Some states may outlaw it. Some won’t. It is the job of Congress to pass a reasonable solution. As for it being a woman’s right? When does the baby acquire rights? Does a fetus at viability have basic human rights? Constitutional rights? And if your answer is they don’t, why not? And as one ages when do they lose their rights?
