Do people claim seniority by language still? My anecdotal experience has been that per language skill peaks after 6 months to 1 year of full time dev. This time frame shrinks the closer the language is to a known toolchain.
I’d be surprised if companies filtered for rust specific experience.
- cholantesh 4y agoI see it all the time in listings and when contacted by companies directly.
- cmrdporcupine 4y agoI assume that what we're seeing here is companies hoping to farm the active community of enthusiastic early pioneers and contributors. That's good and all as a reward for people who have "put the time in" to Rust when it was nascent and ready-buys talent that already has experience; but it does limit your talent pool a lot. And more specifically limits you to people who were not working practical industry jobs in places where their employer would not have countenanced Rust development, or people who did not have extracurricular time for open source projects, etc.
- cholantesh 4y agoI lost my context while typing that comment and ended up speaking more generally. I can't speak to what the calculus is while hiring Rust developers but what you're positing sounds plausible. I know that, as someone with a very small amount of production Elixir experience, a lot of JDs I see are pretty adamant about it. Ergo, if I wanted to move to an org that is using Elixir, I would have to downlevel, and I don't know if I like the language that much...
- cmrdporcupine 4y agoIt depends on the employer. What I'm finding right now is places that are hiring for Rust are mostly willing to entertain people with a deep C++ background. But I've definitely seen some asking for more specific multiple year Rust experience. Right now the job market for Rust seems to be mostly biased towards crypto companies, though, which is somewhere I won't go. But I'm currently interviewing at two places that do Rust, and interviewed at another a month ago, so.
