I live in the USA and I don't know WTF he's talking about.
- bagels 4y agoI live in bay area, haven't made less than 100k since 2002. Obviously pay in Midwest is lower.
- scollet 4y agoWhy is that obvious
- burntoutfire 4y agoBecause pretty much everyone knows about it, i.e. it's not a surprise.
- Firmwarrior 4y agoHot take: If you can follow the posts here, you can make 300k in the US Check out the salaries on levels.fyi And no, it is not reasonable to make 100k in the Midwest instead. Unless you're buying like $50,000 worth of gas and eggs per year, you're going to save WAY more in the SF Bay Area and reclaim years of your life by retiring earlier

- kube-system 4y agoBuy a house in the midwest that's the same size as one in the bay area and you can retire early on 100k income :) And it'll have a lawn instead of a tent city.
- seanmcdirmid 4y ago> And it'll have a lawn instead of a tent city. Having lived in Toledo before, the Midwest has its own economic problems (yes, not even the unhoused want to setup tent cities there).
- kube-system 4y agoThere's bad spots, of course. But there are no shortage of pleasant places with dirt cheap housing, which is not the case in the bay area. I've got a safe, friendly, walkable neighborhood, and my mortgage is 6 percent of my gross income. The bay area is not the only place where you can save a lot of money.
- seanmcdirmid 4y agoWhere, may I ask? The Midwest is a huge place with affluent neighborhoods, but those generally aren’t walkable. I enjoyed living in downtown Toledo much more than I did Sylvania (a more affluent suburb next door).
- Firmwarrior 4y agoYeah, or you could buy and live in a crappy condo in the bay area, then sell it and buy a nice house in the Midwest 10 years sooner There's definitely a tradeoff, but it's disingenuous to imply that it's a good financial move to take a 50% pay cut That said, these last couple of years remote work has really taken off, so maybe you can have your nice house in the Midwest and retire early in it too
- scollet 4y ago> If you can follow the posts here Most people on this site are severely lacking.
