Not fine, or you just disagree with? Two very different things.
- dekhn 4y agoBoth. I mean, I totally love that he's obsessed with Culture novels and named his money team "Excession". But I think his behavior is antisocial- rich person acting almost entirely from ego.
- ceejayoz 4y agoIt's rather fascinating to me that Musk entirely missed the point of the Culture novels. Banks was a socialist, writing about a socialist utopia that literally goes in to intervene and overthrow billionaire oligarchs like Veppers in Surface Detail. Veppers is even trying to wiggle out of a contract he doesn't want; it's a central plot point!
- dekhn 4y agoI didn't particularly like Surface Detail. But, anyway: I think the Culture is post-scarcity, computer-managed, not socialist. Socialist systems deal with scarcity. If people in the culture truly wanted to play with money, there would always have been some station or ship they could go to and play with money.
- ceejayoz 4y agoPost-scarcity socialism, luxury fully-automated space communism; whatever you call it, it's not hyper-capitalism.
