Ask HN: Got an offer from Google but I already started a new job
G interview process was unexpectedly slow, I started interviewing with them in Oct last year. After figuring out they will take forever, i started interviewing at other companies and in JUNE, they have given me an offer but I'm already almost 6 months in at a new company. I want to leave for Google, however, it'd be mean throwing away my prorated sign on bonus and also undo vested stocks. More than 100k+ loss.
Is there a way to tell G I accept the offer but I will start next year 2nd quarter.
Because that is unreasonable way of doing things

It might actually be worth explaining the situation, and asking to start team match after the new year. I don’t know their policy, but they might be willing to compensate you with a higher on hire bonus to get you to quit.
- lifeplusplus 4y agoi think my recruiter might be the laziest human being on earth, only hear once a month and only after asking about an update and it's clear they don't remember the info they told me last time or wrote down what they have told me because they are just repeating what they had already told me and explaining things that were already explained.
- wombat-man 4y agoI guess just write to them and ask for what you want. Give a specific number for the sign on bonus and explain its because you lose this other bonus. They may say no.
- sitkack 4y agoIt is common for the second company to pay off the first hiring bonus and accelerate your stock grant. Basically make good on everything and give u a lateral move plus you should get a pay bump.

Whats the value add of 6 more months of Google? How much faster do you get your next promotion at Google if you start now, how much is that promotion worth? $100k seems like a lot, and it is in real terms. I find that people can some times get tripped up by the total amounts though. In my experience it's usually (but not always) better to keep momentum and go to the better company sooner.
